Art in Focus Series held at the Southampton campus library. October’s event was The Secret Life of Clothing featured a talk by artist Sue Ferguson Gussow, a Professor Emerita of The Cooper Union School of Architecture. Gussow presented a number of drawings from her series Unoccupied Clothing. In each, she traced her fascination with the movement of clothing and how to capture the missing shape of the person who is no longer there. She went on to show a number of portraits of friends and former students, all while detailing her process, her inspirations, and her passions.
On November 5, the Art in Focus Series hosted Dan Welden, a pioneer of Solarplat intaglio printing and author of Printmaking in the Sun (Watson-Guptill, 2001).
On November 8, the University Libraries held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the official opening of the Stony Brook University Libraries Center for Digital HumanitiesFunded by a generous gift from the Gladys Brooks Foundation, the Center for Digital Humanities provides instruction and support to students, faculty, and staff engaged in the digital humanities.
Patricia Brennan, the Director of the National Library of Medicine, spent the day at Stony Brook University on Friday, September 6, 2019 where she met with bioinformatics professionals and medical librarians and gave a fantastic presentation on the use of Artificial Intelligence for improvement of healthcare information delivery. Patti and the NLM are committed to using data science to make sure that technological advances are applied to problems of health and healthcare in the most efficient and effective ways possible. On October 24, the University Libraries hosted a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon during which participants worked to improve articles related to the Open Access Week theme “Open for Whom? Equity in Open Knowledge.”
On the evening of Friday, November 8, Stony Brook University Professors Sarah Weaver and Margaret Schedel along with the University Libraries will celebrate the launching of their inaugural open access journal, Journal of Network Music and Arts.
Chris Kretz has assumed the role of Head of Academic Engagement which leads the Libraries’ overall academic engagement initiative on impacting student success, faculty productivity, and meaningful outreach for the entire University community. He is the producer, writer, and host of The Radio Tower, The Long Island History Project, and the Dowling Library Omnibus podcasts. Currently, he is the New York State Coordinator for the Online Biographical Dictionary of the Woman Suffrage Movement in the United States being developed by the Center for the Historical Study of Women and Gender at Binghamton University.
