« Reply #1 on: June 07, 2019, 01:25:05 PM »
Congratulations to librarians Darren Chase, Head of Scholarly Communication, and Clara Y. Tran, Head of Science & Engineering, who both received the Faculty Senate Service Award!

Health Sciences librarians Jessica Koos, Jamie Saragossi, and Gregg Stevens presented on various topics at the 2019 Medical Library Association’s Annual Meeting in May.

Distinguished Librarian, Michael Huang, was selected to present at the State University of New York Distinguished Academy at the annual meeting on June 10. His presentation, Libraries without Borders: Global library initiatives at Stony Brook University, will cover his work developing the Office of Global Library Initiatives.

The University Libraries, in collaboration with the University Libraries’ Equity, Inclusion and Diversity Committee and the Hillel Foundation, hosted a program on Thursday, May 2, at with Holocaust survivor and author/speaker Ruth Minsky Sender talked about her experience as a child living through the Holocaust.

On May 4, the University Libraries held a showing of Lone Survivor, a film based the book by Marcus Luttrell about the 2005 Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan that claimed the life of 3 Navy SEALS including Lt. Michael P. Murphy. During the 2018-2019 academic year, librarians collaborated with students and staff at the Office of Veterans Affairs to build a collection of books relevant to military studies and veterans affairs.  Supported by a Presidential Mini-grant for Departmental Diversity, this collection was created with the direct input of veteran students.  Librarians hosted a literary karaoke event to promote use of this collection and to encourage members of the Stony Brook University community to engage with important issues surrounding the military and veteran experience.  Held the day after the screening of Lone Survivor, the karaoke event drew a group of engaged readers and listeners who met to share passages which resonated with them.

Jin Guo, Director of Collections and Resource Management, presented on project management at the Long Island Library Resources Council (LILRC) 5th Annual Technical Services Open Forum. Her talk, titled “Work Smarter, Together: Unifying the Library Management Systems”, reviewed her experience with unifying the two library management systems at SBU in preparation for Alma.

The University Libraries says goodbye to Darren Chase, Head of Scholarly Communications, who will start his new role as the Director of the James M. Milne Library at SUNY Oneonta in August. Darren started his University Libraries career in 2006 as Informatics Librarian at the Health Sciences Library, moving on to serve as the Head of the Southampton Library from 2008-2010, then as the Library Webmaster from 2010 to 2015. Since 2015, Darren has led the Center for Scholarly Communication. He was instrumental in promoting the University’s open access policy, building the Academic Commons, and advancing initiatives related to OER and data management. Darren’s been an active member of the instruction and reference team and a leader on campus. He has service as the President of the College of Arts & Sciences Senate and sits on the Executive Committee of the University Senate. We wish Darren the very best!

Congratulations to Sr. Assistant Librarian Amanda Calabrese on receiving the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship!

The Resnick Library is undergoing some physical changes this summer and fall as the cafe that was in the building has been moved, so the space is now being re-allocated. Designs are being looked at, and we hope to have a plan in place soon for a space that is both welcoming and better meets student needs.

Librarians Jenny Collins, Amanda Calabrese, and Carrie Fishner attended ACRL 2019 in Cleveland, OH. Carrie presented on a panel and a round table at the conference. Overall, the conference ROCKED, and there is an album cover photo to prove it!

We are pleased to welcome Stacy Abrey as the newest member of the library team! Stacy is our new Tech Services clerk. She's only been with us for about a month but it feels like longer, in a good way. :)  Stacy will be heading to the NYSLAA conference in Geneva this week with most of the other staffers.

We hosted our annual Student Research Showcase in April. https://web.cobleskill.edu/media/2019/04/29/2019-student-research-showcase-features-abundance-of-research-across-disciplines/
