Library Division Chair Teresa Ronning will join Mark McBride and Michael Daly for a presentation on OERs at the spring conference of the SUNY Community College Business Officers Association in Saratoga Springs on June 18.

The SUNY Adirondack Library, in conjunction with the college's Sustainability Committee, will offer an Environmental Film and Discussion Series in 2018-19. Some suggested films from Bullfrog Films:
- How to Let Go of the World and Love All the Things Climate Can't Change
- Symbiotic Earth
- Sacred Cod
- Death by Design
The schedule will be ready mid-July so faculty can plan assignments around the film topics.  The series will also be open to the community.

Campus Updates - Stony Brook University
« Reply #2 on: June 09, 2018, 10:51:46 AM »
The Southampton campus library is partnering with the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center to bring a lecture series called Art in Focus to the campus. This 3-part lecture series are free and open to the public. The first lecture, held 22 May, featured Professor Katy Siegel, Thaw Chair in Modern American Art at Stony Brook University and Senior Programming and Research Curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The subject was Jack Whitten, the noted abstract artist who passed away in January. On 5 June, Dr. Elliot Bostwick Davis of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, spoke about indigenous Native American influences on Jackson Pollock as he created his mural for Guggenheim. The final lecture will take place on 19 June and will explore Auguste Rodin’s influence on Asian aesthetics over the last century.

The Medical Library Association (MLA) held its 2018 annual meeting in Atlanta, Georgia from May 18th-23rd. Health Sciences Librarians Jessica Koos and Laurel Scheinfeld presented a poster on their research project investigating the educational and professional backgrounds of medical librarians. Jessica Koos also presented on a grant project co-authored by librarians Jamie Saragossi and Gregg Stevens, in which they trained public librarians on how to use free online health resources created by the National Library of Medicine.

On May 4, 2018 Stony Brook Health Sciences Librarian Laurel Scheinfeld attended the annual conference of the Association for College and Research Libraries, New England Chapter (ACRL/NE) where she gave a presentation with Joan Wagner and Blanche Leeman from Touro College.  The presentation focused on 3D Printing in Health Sciences Libraries, specifically a pilot project that involves teaching occupational therapy (OT) students to design and create assistive devices for their patients using computer aided design (CAD) software and 3D printers.  In this project, librarians are embedded in a 2-credit OT course in which they provide instruction to students in 3D design and operation of the printer, as well as the organization and documentation of the inter-professional communication between OT students, engineering students, and OT faculty.  This is an example of an innovative way librarians can support the health science curriculum.

On 30 May 2018, Flora Pollydore, a clerk at the Math/Physics Library, retired after 29 years at Stony Brook University.

Campus Updates - Cobleskill

We are excited to report that Mandy Babirad will be joining us as our new Outreach & Public Services Librarian this summer! We stole her from Morrisville.

Meanwhile, Circulation Manager Brendan Aucoin was stolen away by Oneonta.

Don LaPlant and Brendan are presenting a poster session at the SUNYLA conference on the impact of 1:1 research consultations. Katherine Brent will also be doing a poster session on assessment of library displays. April Davies will do a Tech Services lightning round presentation on a weighted allocation formula for acquisitions.

Cathy Wise and Dawn Foland were in Corning last week for the NYSLAA conference. Based on the pictures they sent, it was a good time as well as educational.

Maritime

After 12 years, Part-time Reference Librarian Geri Hebert handed in her notice of retirement from Maritime College. Geri had been working evenings and weekends for us, and had served as ship's librarian on several occasions. She also worked full-time as the Access Services Librarian at Bronx Community College (CUNY), which she is also retiring from. In her retirement she will be moving back to her home state of North Carolina. We wish her all the best.

Rebecca Hyams, who in the Library's transition period had been serving as the Interim Managing Director of the College's Center for Teaching Excellence, was asked to stay on in the role in an ongoing capacity.

The TS Empire State VI is currently off the coast of Europe. The ship docked in Puerto Rico in May where students from Maritime were joined from students from ESF and Albany to help in relief projects. Apparently, some of the guests from other campuses were a little surprised at how comfortable our students were with power tools! They recently spent three days in Mallorca and their next stop is Glasgow, where some of the crew and students will be switching out. This year we hired Kaitlyn Tanis, who is a recent MLS grad and she's serving onboard for the full cruise(!). You can follow our ship library blog here: https://medium.com/@empirestate

Otherwise, we're all in the full swing of summer projects including weeding, data cleanup, and planning for fall courses and events.

Delhi's Resnick Library is undergoing a major building renovation, replacing all of our exterior windows and doors. This means that over the summer we are shifting collections and playing musical offices as we accommodate the window replacements. We are looking forward to no longer using our office window sills as winter time refrigerators however.

The Library has been able to add a lot of great new seating over the last semester, due to student requests. It has been in strong demand, and has been well received by students. Some of the latest programs that students enjoyed included March Madness of Books, Book Water Color Paintings, Bullet Journaling, and Harry Potter Wand Making.

Our newest library addition, Zander James, joined us Monday - his mom Elizabeth Santobuono was very happy to welcome him to the world and the rest of the staff is very excited to meet him! According to mom, he seems like a very chill little man, so far.

As a result of a self-study and outside consultant report, the Alfred University Libraries are reorganizing and rebranding as a more unified academic unit while simultaneously maintaining the distinct  and unique identities of the two campus libraries (Herrick and Scholes). First steps include creating a new administrative structure with one Dean and one Director overseeing both libraries and the formation of several new cross-library teams. Anticipated outcomes include greater collaboration, the sharing of expertise and time, and better efficiency.
