President's Report
« on: March 09, 2017, 07:43:30 PM »
Hello SUNYLA!

Just a few things to report:

1.   We’re still looking for a 1st Vice President, a 2nd Vice President (SUNYLA Conference Chair), and a Treasurer for next year.  If you are interested in running, please let Carrie Fisher (fishnecj@delhi.edu) know!  If you know anyone that would be interested in running, please encourage them to contact Carrie.
2.   We had our third successful SUNYLA Midwinter Virtual Conference in February!  Jill Locascio will be providing more information about this conference in her report.  The videos should be up on the website next week.
3.   Patrick Callahan, the Library Director at SUNY Purchase, is serving as the SUNY Libraries Consortium liaison for SUNYLA (for the short term) until an official liaison is appointed.  Please join me in welcoming Patrick in this new role!
4.   During lunch at the last SUNYLA Meeting at FIT, there was a discussion about having a SUNYLA Mascot.  Dawn Wing of Suffolk County Community College offered her artistic talents and created three different mascots for us to take a look at and potentially select.  Please take a look at Dawn’s excellent work (attached to this message)!
5.   The New York Library Association (NYLA) emailed me about SUNYLA selecting two representatives to take part in their Summit being held on Friday, June 9th in Albany.  Please see the message below:

The New York Library Association (NYLA) leads, educates and advocates for the advancement of the New York Library community. NYLA and the Academic & Special Library Section (ASLS) are hosting a one-day Summit to better understand the needs and concerns of New York State’s academic, research and special libraries.

This letter is to invite SUNYLA to appoint and register two representatives, duly-appointed to speak for your group, to attend the Summit.

The Academic, Research and Special Library Summit 2017 will take place, Friday, June 9, 2017 in the Capital Region. A hotel room block for Thursday, June 8 is being coordinated, as is an informal dinner option. While there is no registration fee to participate in the Summit, unfortunately we are unable to cover travel and lodging expenses.

The delegates from each invited group will have an opportunity to share strengths, opportunities, and challenges to fulfilling their given mission, propose strategies to identify which of these are common or possibly systemic, and offer collaborative strategies to build on common strengths and lessen or eliminate challenges. Particular attention will be given to those concerns that may be addressed via legislation at the state level.

Summit participants will also work toward the development of a white paper commenting on the status of Academic, Research and Special Libraries in New York State. This report would provide a snapshot of the community based on collectively agreed upon benchmarks. The intent in creating this paper is to formally document the immense value of our strong and rich mix of academic, research and special libraries in New York State.

Please register your group’s delegates using the online form by Saturday, April 15, 2017.

Respectfully submitted,
Bill Jones (SUNY Geneseo)
