Maritime

Renovation finished on the Archives a few weeks ago! Right now we're in the process of moving all of our archival collections out of their temporary locations and into new compact shelving.

Speaking of our Archives, Annie Tummino was interviewed on News12 about last year's Snug Harbor project that went live earlier this year:

Acquisitions and User Services Librarian Katie Bram recently took a job with the New York City Department of Buildings as a Records Manager. We were really sad to see her go but wish her all the best in her new position.

Otherwise we've all been super busy keeping the ship running, so to speak.

Nina Warren has announced her intent to retire at the end of June this year.  Nina first started at GCC as a part-time librarian in 1992, becoming full-time in 1993 and she then became Director of Library Services in 2007.  She has been a campus leader among supervisors and is a positive role model for all.  Under Nina’s leadership, the library transitioned to a 7-day-a-week operation in response to student demand.  Nina's position has been posted and applications are being accepted until March 19. For additional information, including qualification requirements and application instructions, go to https://genesee.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=81273.

Nina's retirement is our big news. Other than that, we've been hosting exhibits and doing themed roving, and you'll see more info about that in the next SUNYLA newsletter.

Stony Brook University campus updates

The University Libraries is hosting a series of events in honor of Women’s History Month.
Scholar Panel
On March 1st, four Stony Brook University faculty members participated in a panel held at the Libraries in honor of Women’s History Month.  The four scholars– Peg Christoff (Asian American Studies), Lisa Diedrich (Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies), Victoria Hesford (Women’s, Gender & Sexuality Studies), and Tracey Walters (Africana Studies)– underscored the intersections between gender and other influential aspects of the human experience.  Their interrogation of gender studies as an analytical methodology, as well as their exploration of key concepts in women’s studies, fostered rich and thought-provoking discussion.
Literary Karaoke
On March 7th, students and faculty members met in the University Libraries’ Center for Scholarly Communication for an hour of literary karaoke in honor of Women’s History Month.  Participants read excerpts from texts written by female authors.  Selections included texts published from the seventeenth through the twenty-first century, as well as many works in translation.  The readings prompted rich discussion and the discovery of some surprising intertextual connections.
On March 9th, Dr. Patricia Aceves hosted a lecture titled “Managing Power & Load: Primer for Working Women.” She discussed her research on McClusky’s Power-Load-Margin theory and how it applies to today’s working woman.  The lecture included engaging conversation on how to decrease load and increase power.

University Libraries’ Special Collections is highlight the papers of Mary Fletcher who authored “A Survey of the Algae Found in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden” (1936).  The collection of papers includes correspondence, nature lists, and photographs.

There are a number of faculty and staff positions open at the library including Health Science Librarian, Cataloging & Metadata Librarian, Director of Collections & Resource Management, Science Librarian, Manager of Music Library and Overnight Manager.
