Staff notes: We've hired two new part-time circulation clerks: Elizabeth Jarnot and Jessica Scheuerman.

Librarians Cindy Hagelberger and Michele Asmus are hard at work organizing the last few events for this year's A Tale for Three Counties project. S.M. Hulse, author of this year's book, Black River, will be visiting GCC on Thursday, March 10.

Cindy H. is also managing the library's 15th Annual Student Poetry Contest.

The library is supporting the college's first-ever Scholar's Symposium, which will take place on Tuesday, March 29. We've been hosting workshops to help students prepare for the research day, we created a Scholars Symposium LibGuide, and we'll be displaying artwork in conjunction with the event.

We're starting to experiment with proactive chat options on our website, and would be curious to hear how this has been received at other campuses. We use Libraryh3lp for our chat client.

Renovations continue in the Science & Engineering Library (North Reading Room). They are expected to be completed by the end of the Spring semester, at which time the Central Reading Room will undergo renovations.  Information on the renovation can be found on the library site: http://library.stonybrook.edu/about-us/library-renovation/

Nathan Baum, Associate Dean for Collection Strategy and Management, retired in January 2016 after 35 years at Stony Brook University.  Heath Martin, the new Associate Dean for Collection Strategy and Management, started on March 1, 2016.

The Stony Brook University Libraries are celebrating Women’s History Month with a Colloquim series that includes talks by scholars/authors, a screening of the film Killing Us Softly 4: Advertising’s Image of Women and Literary Karaoke.  http://guides.library.stonybrook.edu/womenshistory

The University Libraries Writers Series kicked off on Tuesday, February 22 with a conversation between authors Douglas Pfeiffer and Joshua Teplitsky. We're moving into high gear for for the 2016 SUNY Undergraduate Research Showcase to be held here at Cobleskill on April 15th. There were over 300 proposals and we're currently expecting 700-1000 people. It stresses me out just to type it!  More info at: http://blog.cobleskill.edu/SURC/surc.html.

The inauguration for President Terenzio is the week before on April 8th. SUNY Board of Trustees Chair, H. Carl McCall will be one of the speakers.

Maritime Update:

Planning is ongoing in our Library Renovation process. We held a "Visioning Session" with our architect and a team from Steelcase that included students, faculty, staff, and administrators on March 2nd. We got a lot of interesting feedback and look forward to continuing to work with the architect to see how we can transform parts of our space into spaces that will better support our users.

Delhi Update

The librarians at SUNY Delhi are working through the spring semester on a number of projects. Carrie Fishner is continuing her personal librarian program working with at risk students closely to better ensure their academic success. Blind date with a book was popular with students and more displays will be forthcoming. I’m working with 64 history students this semester teaching them archival and preservation techniques while they help the library to index our substantial collection of photographs. The librarians here are testing a new way of getting assessment from one shot instruction sessions;  piloting a program that we hope will prove useful enough to expand in the fall semester. Other than that it’s the usual rhythm of instruction, reference and other tasks.

Monroe Community College Update:

Charlene Rezabek, cataloger extraordinaire, retired from Monroe Community College as of February 2016. Many thanks to Charlene for her years of service, she will be greatly missed.

Albany Updates

We are hosting a Diversity Transformation and Pedagogy Workshops series called Continuing Critical Conversations through Transformative Teaching and Learning.  Two programs are anticipated in April and May: Instructor Support for Re-Constructing Course Activities and Syllabi to address Diversity Transformation and Conversations on Resources:  Media and Frameworks for Transformative Teaching and Learning.  Additional information on this series can be found at: https://transformativeconversations.wordpress.com/

Our last Spring 2016 Campus Conversations in Standish is coming up on April 6 @ 12:35. Rick Fogarty, Ph.D., Associate Professor, History, University at Albany will hold a program titled: What Can 1916 Tell Us About 2016? Europe, Islam, and the Middle East. All Campus Conversations will be held in the Patricia and J. Spencer Standish Board Room, located on the third floor of the Science Library at the University at Albany.

Personnel Announcements:
Deborah Bernnard has agreed to serve as Director of Public Services, effective February 25, 2016. As Director of Public Services, Deborah will oversee four departments: Access Services, Information Literacy, the Interactive Media Center, and Reference and Research Services. Cathy Dwyer has agreed to serve as Interim Head, Dewey Graduate Library. A search for the Head, Dewey Graduate Library will be launched in the very near future.
