Niagara C.C.C.

We are busy this summer preparing to send part of our collection of books and media to the new Hospitality and Tourism Center being built in Niagara Falls, NY.  The former Rainbow Mall is being renovated to accomodate our Culinary Arts, Hospitality, and Tourism programs slated to begin operations there in September 2012. 
Also our Vice-President of Student Affairs, Bassam Deeb, has accepted a position as President of Trocaire College in Buffalo beginning this fall.

I am pleased to announce the names of two new staff members at SUNY Delhi! Our new Acquisitions Manager is Brad Post, and our new Reference & Instruction Librarian is Megan Welsh, who is finishing up her MLIS at University of Denver. We are very excited to have them on board.

Due to the renovation of another building on campus, an additional computer classroom was built in the library during the mid-semester break. Now that summer is here, we have been busy moving things out of the new classroom space and trying to rearrange furniture to compensate for the loss of quiet study space. We have created a new, more inviting area for our leisure reading materials, and we are doing some heavy weeding of VHS tapes and older reference books. If you're interested in withdrawn items, keep an eye on your e-mail; we'll be offering these up soon.

Genesee Community College

Reference Services Librarian Anita Whitehead retired May 18th and Cindy Hagelberger, our part-time cataloger, was hired for this position starting June 1st. Cindy came to GCC in 1996 as a part-time Reference Librarian and has had many roles in the library since then. We are happy to welcome Cindy to her new position.

SUNY Old Westbury

We are busy preparing for the library renovation. Phase one should begin shortly. We are in the process of removing old books, changing some of the reference collection to circulation, removing periodicals that are available online as well as removing old VHS videos.
Classes are not being scheduled in the library for the summer and fall.
Before the semester ended our business librarian, Curt Friehs did offer workshops for our business databases and another workshop in conjunction with career services, which were viewed as successful.

Construction is well underway for dorms at the south end of the SUNY Adirondack campus. They should open by Fall semester, 2013. The new Wilton Center building in Saratoga County is almost done, in time to open this fall. More here: http://www.sunyacc.edu/academics/wilton.

Leslie Vega will be joining Binghamton University Libraries as the new Visual Arts Librarian. Leslie was formerly working as the Collections Management Assistant at the Carnegie Museum of Art and earned her MLS degree from the Pratt Institute.

Elizabeth Brown, the Scholarly Communications and Library Grants Officer, gave a presentation on research analytical data at the American Chemical Society National Meeting and Exposition in San Diego. The symposium, Libraries and Institutional Research Evaluation, was taped and made available as streaming presentations with the talk, Finding the Future located at http://edmc.acs.org/Common/presentation.aspx/Spring2012/CINF/CINF004.

During the 2012 Eastern New York Association of College and Research Libraries (ENYACRL) Conference, in Utica, NY, Rachel Jaffe, Metadata/Cataloging Librarian, Benjamin Andrus, Sociology and Education Librarian, and Julie Wang, Asian and Asian American Studies Librarian presented a poster titled,  “Going global: New frontiers in academic librarianship.”

We've had a busy semester and just completed our 2012 Information Literacy Assessment which went well. We wasted no time once spring semester ended to start inventory of our collection.  I think we're all looking forward to the summer break, which is usually slow and sluggish and gives us plenty of time to catch up and complete projects.

Reference/Instruction Librarian Fran Apollo retired May 31st. The search for her replacement is in progress and we hope to be done by the end of June. Fingers crossed.

Our recent LibQual run was smooth and very successful. We got a great response rate.

SUNY Potsdam Campus update

Several small construction projects are planned for the Summer: Archives HVAC will be replaced, Basement leaks will be investigated and repaired, and the handicap ramp/loading dock will be replaced. The Archives Reading room was recently renovated and now has better wireless access, more seating and better access to electrical outlets.

A Clerk 2 (Acquisitions Department) has been hired with a start date of June 18. The search for a Meta-Data Discovery Librarian is well underway.  Discussions are continuing between SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam for a shared services position for InterLibrary Loan.

Jenica Rogers (Library Director) has been appointed as Chair of the Bicentennial Celebration Planning Committee.  Bicentennial celebrations are being planned for 2015-2016.

All materials (books, periodicals, videos and government documents) in the "Stacks" collections will be shifted this Summer, and all collections on the lower level will be moved to the 2nd floor.  This is in preparation of a renovation project scheduled to begin in 2013/2014.  

Recent campus announcement from President Schwaller regarding a Shared Services position: "SUNY Canton and SUNY Potsdam have appointed the first chief financial officer to serve both campuses, as part of their ongoing shared services strategy. Natalie Higley has been selected as the Vice President of Business Affairs and Administrative Services for both institutions. She will begin service on July 1."

Michelle Bishop joined Penfield in April as our First Year Experience Librarian. 

Our director search was completed and we are happy to report that Barbara Shaffer is our new Director.

A rennovation of Penfield's front lobby/entrance area will take place in late summer or early fall.

We have digitized campus commencements from 1992-2006 and several Safe Haven oral histories from some of the refugees from Europe who were placed in an internment camp at Fort Ontario during World War II.  http://www.oswego.edu/library/archives/digitized_collections.html#videos

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Bill Drew retired on May 11 and as of May 14 Susanna Van Sant became the full time, temporary Acquisitions and Collection Management Librarian.  A formal search for a permanent hire will be conducted later this summer.

We're in the home stretch of a significant weeding project to review books that had not circulated in 10 or more years.

An inventory of the full collection is under way.

We've added more Nooks and mp3/audio players (Fuzes and iPod touches) to our circulating collections and we expect to be circulating iPads in the fall.

The College web site is undergoing a redesign and the Library's new pages will be ready for the fall semester.

Cortland

The consultant's report, "Evaluation and Suggestions for Reference and Instruction Services" and accompanying plan were released in May for comments from the campus.  This comment period will extend until the fall semester.

The Teaching Materials Center librarian position has been placed on hold, pending the completion of the comment period on the report.  In the meantime, Lisa Czirr has been appointed Interim TMC Librarian.

This past semester, Shared Services has been a focus on our campus and at Morrisville State College.  The Library was one of several initiatives studied for shared services.  Barb Grimes served on the SUNYIT Shared Services Committee and was heavily involved with the library initiative.  Librarians at SUNYIT and Morrisville identified three short-term areas where the two campuses could share library services and developed ways of making this happen.  These ares were: shared virtual reference service on Saturdays, a shared library tutorial created by librarians at both colleges and the SUNYIT instructional technologist, and a shared library director.  Morrisville State College librarians had decided to eliminate reference services on Saturdays due to low usage about two years ago.  SUNYIT has reference service coverage on Saturdays. The shared virtual reference service was initiated in April and uses freely available chat software (Meebo) and Google Docs to facilitate information sharing and documentation of usage data.   We will continue this through next year to see how valuable and how well used it is.  The tutorial collaboration began in early May and uses Google Docs and Skype to help us create the Captivate product.  This project should be completed this week.  Hopefully, this will be the start of more joint collaborations.  When our shared services committees looked at sharing a library director, it was decided that it was not a priority at this time.  However, SUNY Provost Lavallee revealed a realigned administrative structure that both campuses learned about on May 23.  According to a new SUNYIT/MSC organizational chart, Morrisville State College's library director, Chris Rudecoff, will also be SUNYIT's library director.  To say this was a surprise to the librarians on both campuses, would be an understatement.  We have received no details or timeline.  This was only one of several organizational changes at SUNYIT and MSC that will be necessary to shift resources from administrative to instructional support on our campuses.  The final report is due to the Chancellor on July 15.

Schenectady County Community College

Sarah McFadden was hired as a part-time reference librarian this spring.  Sarah previously interned at Begley Library, and we are happy that she is now working here!

Caroline Buff is giving a demonstration of Ask Us 24/7 at CDLC in Albany on Tuesday, June 26, 9:30am. 

We are in the midst of a large weeding project, to make way for future library renovation.  There is much construction elsewhere on campus.  Student housing is due to be completed by the start of fall classes, as is the new music wing.  Due to construction, the library will be closed for part of June, with library services being offered from a location elsewhere on campus.
