New business this year!
The IDEA committee has hit the ground running with two new initiatives for the year: the first is a Discord server for informal discussions, venting, and mutual support related to DEIA issues. The server is open to all SUNYLA members, and the invitation link is available here:
https://discord.gg/evdSTubP Also new this year, thanks to the generous efforts of Julie Setele and Nicole Westerdahl, we have launched the Insights IDEA book club! The first meeting was Wednesday September 17th and we had attendees from all over SUNYLA. We're reading Can't Even: How Millennials became the burnout generation by Anne Helen Petersen, and the next meeting is on Wednesday, October 22nd. Email me at mcameron@mvcc.edu if you're interested in getting more information. We'll be selecting a new book in the spring, so don't fret if you feel it's too late for you to catch up to this one.
We're still working on mini guides. The topics in progress include student anxiety, stimming and sensory regulation behaviors, and immigration/know your rights. We'll also be re-releasing the existing mini guides with some committee branding to help spread awareness of the project soon.
As always, please send me an email if you have any information related to DEI issues in your libraries. As information scientists know, staying informed is central to our ability to make a difference.
In solidarity,
-Milo Cameron
