I’m sorry to miss the council meeting. I will be coming to the conference later today after my son’s graduation from elementary school. Megan Benson, the other co-chair, is out of the country.
Since there are often first-time council meeting attendees during the annual conference, I like to provide a quick summary of what SILC is all about. SILC stands for the SUNYLA Information Literacy Committee. We are committed to advancing information literacy skills and supporting the professional development of academic librarians through collaborative training and resources.
All are welcome to attend our events. Events are shared through the SUNYLA listserv and include community conversations and the annual Instruction Showcase in January.
SILC hosted one community conversation during the spring 2025 semester on Tackling SUNY GenEd with Shared Information Literacy Modules on Wednesday, April 9. This session will be led by Holly Kuhl, Nicole Baker, Bryan Kvet, and Sarah Petras. They collaborated to create a shared curriculum and mini-lessons that address prevalent information literacy challenges and align with the SUNY GenEd Info. Lit. Competency.
We will have a SIG meeting later today for anyone interested in learning more about SILC and sharing their ideas on how to improve the committee. We will be in Sanford Hall room 219 from 4-5.
New this summer, we are creating working groups to tackle new projects. We are looking for individuals interested in joining a working group focused on the following:
- Creating an instructional material shared repository (new)
- Information Literacy micro courses (in-progress: attend the D5 session on Thursday to learn more)
- Advancing AI literacy (new)
You can email jireland@mvcc.edu if you are interested in joining a working group, or go to the SIG meeting and express interest there.
Looking forward to catching up with everyone at the conference!
Jocelyn Ireland, SILC Co-Chair
