The H.G. Lewis Library welcomes Nancy Kennedy as our new Library Division Chair.  Nancy has served as Technical Services Librarian for many years.  She will continue with her work in cataloging while serving as chair.  The acquisitions work will now be done by Jeanne Tuohey, Reference Librarian.  We are having our part-time librarians fill in at reference to accommodate this transition.
New technology is appearing almost every week as we reap the benefits of a large technology grant.  We recently received:  9 iPad 2s; a 16-iPad charging cart/syncing unit for storage; 15 new laptops; 6 MacBooks; and 5 Kindles.  We are in the process of working out procedures for purchase and downloading titles for the Kindles.
In Spring/Summer 2001 we got several new media stations for viewing/listening, as well as digital cameras, camcorders, and audio recorders.  Some of this equipment is primarily used by our Digital Media students, but all of it does circulate. We also have new computers and work stations in our Reference area. So there are lots of exciting new toys around and patrons are using them.
We now have a subscription to the entire Master Academic Collection of streaming videos from Films on Demand starting in September 2011. Last semester we only had the Humanities/Social Sciences Collection.  Because of the high amount of usage and requests from faculty and students, we decided to expand the amount of titles available on streaming video. New this year is the fact that the videos have been re-encoded to allow playback on our library iPads, as well as on the iPad Touch or iPhones used by many of our patrons.

Campus Updates - Cobleskill
« Reply #4 on: September 15, 2011, 02:21:46 PM »
Fran Apollo is heading to Monmouth, NJ Sept. 23-24 to present at the Atlantic Coast Teaching of Psychology (ACToP) Conference, along with Dr. Amy Corbett. Their session is entitled “General Psychology Research Papers and Increased Information Literacy Skills: A Collaborative Project.”

Van Wagenen Library will be hosting its annual afternoon of games on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 3-6pm in honor of National Gaming Day.

Construction in the Library is almost done at long last. A few odds and ends (like network cabling!) are all that remain. The place is much more open now and there’ve been a lot of improvements to basics like lighting and bathrooms. People now have a little less time to enjoy the improvements though, we had to start closing earlier because of cuts to our student worker budget.

We had an interesting start to the school year thanks to all the flooding. The Library itself sustained no damage beyond a couple of roof leaks. SUNY Cobleskill is also part of the new shared-president experiment. We're now sharing Dr. Candace Vancko with Delhi. Most everyone seems to be cautiously optimistic at this point. We're trying to take a proactive approach by talking with the librarians at Delhi about ways to leverage the collaborative work our libraries already do.

As the college migrates to a new content management system, the Online Library has successfully launched it's new, streamlined home page. With accessibility and ease of navigation in mind, the new home page represents a next step in student-centered, minimalist design.  The library is also in the middle of it's fourth full year of offering hands-on, live Elluminate workshops on basic information skills to it's students and plans to expand their offerings in the near future.

In September, evening and weekend librarian Ian Hertz started his new position at Winston Salem State University as their new Business Librarian. We wish him the best as he moves to warmer climes!

Just in time for the fall semester, the Library Assessment Team (LAT) completed its working draft of the second triennial report. The report provides an overview of the library’s assessment efforts over the last three years, covering circulation patterns and database usage, reference and instructional services, as well as user satisfaction. We were pleased to find a number of areas of improvement, especially in terms of our data-gathering efforts, and we created an action list to guide our assessment activities moving forward. If you are interested in receiving a final draft upon its completion, please contact Dunstan McNutt at mcnuttdc@delhi.edu.

Aside from the typical flurry of activity that comes with the beginning of another academic year, there is not much else to report. SUNY Delhi was spared the worst of tropical storms Irene and Lee, but many of the surrounding communities were not as fortunate. There are a number of volunteer opportunities for those that are interested, and a great deal of information is available through the MARK Project, a rural development organization for the Catskills region. The following link provides information on flood recovery efforts:

The library is still going through some physical changes.  The furniture for the new first floor computer area could not be delivered until the first week of classes.  This delayed the electrical and cable work and we are almost ready to install the computers.  The Learning Center tutors have not yet set up shop in the Learning Center area of the building.  We hope they will begin soon.  We have been hosting the First Year Seminar classes and have seen more of the freshmen than usual this year as a result.

We, too, are sharing our president with another campus, Morrisville State College.  Unlike Cobleskill, we have been asked not to be proactive in seeking out the librarians and others at Morrisville.  We have been asked to wait until we are contacted by them as we want to be sensitive to their feelings.  We remain optimistic that this can be a great relationship.

SUNY Adirondack is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The festivities kicked off the weekend of Sept. 16-17 with fireworks, a homecoming day with a bike rally, craft fair, food at 1960s prices, art show, and music. Details are at http://www.sunyacc.edu/50th/ . On October 8, the college will have a black-tie-optional Gala at the Sagamore Resort on Lake George. The Gala will benefit the ACC Foundation Scholarship Fund.

The library's "College History" LibGuide ( http://libguides.sunyacc.edu/collegehistory) covers the founding, history and development of the college, with audio files, videos of interviews with people who were instrumental in the history of the college, listings and images of print material and more. The guide was created by Caitlin Sheldon, who interned at Adirondack in the spring and is now a part-time reference librarian at Schenectady County Community College. The SUNY Adirondack home page also links to this guide.

In an effort to boost retention, the library worked with the college counselors to establish a select set of textbooks to place on reserve. The counselors worked with the Division Chairs to identify core courses to begin this effort. The Bookstore staff provided the list to send to faculty and a discount making these available for students who are unable to purchase textbooks at the start of the semester.

Emily Goodspeed joined the staff as a part-time Cataloging Librarian in April, replacing Melitta White, who retired. Emily graduated from University at Albany with an M.S.I.S. in Library Services in 2008. She interned at the SUNY Adirondack Library during the Fall 2008 semester. She's very familiar with the campus because she was a student, graduating in 2004 with an A.S. in Liberal Arts before earning a B.A. in English from The College of Saint Rose in 2006.

"Deaf Resources" is now the 76th LibGuide on SUNY Adirondack Library's page. It was written by Joyce Miller in conjunction with the college's Accessiblity Services Office.

« Reply #10 on: September 16, 2011, 04:36:06 PM »
Lots of changes:

Lori Lampert has announced her retirement after 30 years of service. Debby Ames was awarded the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship. Kim Myers will be taking a one-year assignment working with Digital Commons from bepress. During this time, Logan Rath will be overseeing Interlibrary Loan in addition to student employees at the Information Desk.

Brockport will be displaying the John Adams Unbound exhibit in October. We have also combined our IT and Research Help at what is called the Information Desk. We held a virtual orientation using ANGEL content rather than an in-person meeting. As previously mentioned, Brockport has signed an agreement with bepress to establish a Digital Commons repository.  Additionally, the Library is planning for a massive renovation and 30,000 square feet expansion including a new main entrance on location.

Tina Perez, Serials and Document Delivery Services Manager, has completed creating a Print Journal database in Serials Solutions, showing volume holdings coverage as well.  Tina added separate Microform Journal and Audio Journal databases.  Now patrons will see from the Serials Solutions Journal Portal whether Kohn Vision Science Library owns a particular issue of a journal, either online or in print, before asking for it via Interlibrary Loan.  As mentioned before, we thank the SUNY’s who helped us with their experience and advice in this process.

Construction for the Center for Student Life and Learning continues.  Optometry has launched a Major Gifts Campaign, “The Vision and The Promise,” to support the education, research, and clinical work of the College.

Summer was its usual busy time with the formation of several new teams organized to streamline and manage professional travel, assessment, and user services. We continued our team development with a “Teaching with Technology” series over the summer exploring services such as Webdoc, Voki, MindMeister, and Adobe Connect. The Teacher Education Resource Center has undergone a major refresh of collection. A new “nook”- a space to interact with the collection and work on projects - and the Imaginarium, - a creative space which contains a die-cut machine, die-cuts and assorted materials for creating projects - have been established.

We have opened the Digital Media Lab (DML) which provides the ability to create and edit video and audio materials, podcasts and interactive web sites, using professional-level equipment and software for both Mac and PC computers. For details, see: http://www.geneseo.edu/dml

An online tutorial for PSYC 251 (Intro to Behavioral Research Methods) that was developed in January 2011 and sparked the initiative of Milne Library's new created Instruction Design Team of Kim Hoffman, Michelle Costello, and Corey Ha has been awarded PRIMO recognition - ACRL'sPeer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online - http://libguides.geneseo.edu/psyc251

The link for Kim Hoffman and Michelle Costello's ACRL presentation that was mentioned in the May newsletter, "One good turn deserves another: Arming instruction librarians with the necessary arsenal" has been posted: http://www.learningtimes.net/acrl/2011/one-good-turn-deserves-another-arming-instruction-librarians-with-the-necessary-arsenal/

Congratulations to Kim Hoffman, who has been promoted to full Librarian as of September 1st. This follows in the wake of her becoming our new Coordinator of Instruction and Reference Services. Rich Dreifuss retired in June after several years of dedicated service. We are currently conducting on-site interviews for two positions: Business Manager and Electronic Resources & Digital Scholarship Librarian. Coleen Hopkins has transferred to the Service Desk team from Tech Services.

Over the summer, Justina Elmore was married in a beachfront ceremony and Kate Pitcher welcomed Cordelia, her first daughter and sister to big brothers Griffin and Silas, on August 28th. Brandon Priddy, Service Desk/ Student Training Manager, has acquired his MLS in the Spring and left Milne. A new intern, Sherry Rhodes, has joined us for the Fall semester.

New staff at SUNY Oswego -- Emily Thompson will be joining Penfield as our new Learning Technologies Librarian on October 3rd.

Building improvements included replacement of our roof, carpets and elevator during the summer.  New opening time 7:45am during the semester and quick print stations so students can easily print what they need.  We continue work on renovation planning for the library.
