During our January meeting, Trudi Jacobson kindly updated everyone on the efforts she’s involved in with the ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education Task Force.  The draft of the revision is being released in two parts.  The first part has been released already. The second part will come out some time in Spring/Summer. For more information, take a look at the website the taskforce has set up. See the links below.

The group agreed that it would be beneficial to ‘piggy back’ on the release of the ACRL first draft, and have our own recommendations concerning the SUNY GER Info Management competencies prepared and ready to be shared shortly after.
 
We also discussed the responses to the survey we sent out. During our March meeting we set up several tasks to start working on simultaneously.  1) Using the responses to the survey to start forming our own suggested revision for the Info Management Competency. 2) Coming up with some basic rational for why we think a revision would be a good idea. 3) Providing some feedback to ACRL on the first part of the draft that's been released. 4) Determining whether/what ACRL Framework threshold concepts are already being met on your campus.

We'll be meeting again in April.

Elections are coming up, so I have attached ballot and delegate instruction documents for review.

I'm still trying to figure out the problem with the SUNYLA Twitter account.  Normally it's relatively easy to claim or "reclaim" are Twitter profile when it has been dormant for awhile, but in our case, our Twitter was set up to receive feeds from our forum so that technically makes it an active account.  Which makes things more complicated.  I have a claim into the Twitter support team but I'm still waiting to hear back.

The meeting will be held in the Standish Room which is in the Science Library at SUNY Albany. The Science Library is on the south end of the Academic Podium behind the Campus Center.  Look for number 14 on the map.

The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday November 20th at SUNY FIT (Seventh Avenue at 27 Street) in the Library Conference Room (E521).  We will start at the usual time 10am but go until 3:30pm so we have a little extra time to go out to lunch.  I have tables reserved at the Rare Bar and Grill. JCC was chosen as a recipient for the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf Grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Our library director, Connie Holberg and another faculty member from the social sciences put on a very successful week long programming event from Nov. 11 to Nov. 15, related to the themes represented by the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf Collection.  You can read more about it here. http://melvildeweylibraryjcc.blogspot.com/2013/11/muslim-journeys-four-days-of-discovery.html

We seem to be off to a good start.  The general consensus was to start by creating a short survey to distribute across SUNY that could be used to determine whether (or to what extent) the Gen Ed. Info Management competency is assessed on campuses SUNYwide.  The idea is to give the survey to the Gen Ed committees on campuses since they would be more familiar with the competency.

The plan is to schedule another meeting for sometime in January to go over the survey results.  In addition, we’ll also use this meeting to go over the ACRL draft of new standards due out in December. It was wisely recommended that we invite Trudi Jacobson to the next meeting, since she is involved with helping to draft the new ACRL standards.

To help encourage a larger perspective on the conversation, a few members of the task force are looking into the possibility of putting some kind of focus group/discussion on at both the CIT conference in May and 3T’s in March.

Where:
The meeting is scheduled for 10am in Room C108.  Just walk over the bridge to the library; C108 is just to the right, after entering through the main quad entrance.

Parking is in Lot 13, which is adjacent to the SRC Arena. To get to the Lot 13 entrance, use the West Seneca Tnpk/Route 175 entrance, and then take a right off the traffic circle; the entrance is a left.
