January 18, 2019 Council Meeting @ FIT / WGIL Update

Our WGIL Lightening Talks continue and seem to be maintaining interest. It's been great listening to all the awesome things our librarians are doing across SUNY.  The recordings for each session are posted on our WGIL blog: https://sunyla.org/informationliteracy/

Our next Lightening Talk will be Monday, January 28 at 10am with Christine Faraday, who will share her recent collaborative experience teaching a 1 credib LIB course with a Science Professor's SCI 101.

Also in the works is a possible forum of some kind where we can discuss Alma and it's impact on library instruction, etc.  We will definitely share more information about that when we know more.

Not much to report.  WGIL is funding a few gift cards for the preconference Logan and Brandon are presenting on Wednesday (SUNYLA Instruction Test Kitchen Open Access Edition) and we will also be having a SIG at 4:45 in Room 2750.

June 14, 2017 Council Meeting @ Stony Brook (Annual) / WGIL Update

1)      Term for committee chair is up – if anyone is interested in taking over the role as WGIL chair please let Logan or I know before the council meeting next week.

2)      There are two surveys we would like to encourage the committee to fill out:

a.      WGIL Initiatives survey – please tell us what initiatives you feel WGIL should focus on next year. https://goo.gl/forms/b5kYwVRynBnqjsGM2

b.      I’m also sending out the survey I sent out a few months ago regarding ACRL Framework initiatives on SUNY campuses:

During the SUNYLA conference last summer there were several folks who mentioned they were in the process of transitioning over to using the ACRL Framework.  I thought it might be a good idea to survey and collect some of these initiatives happening across SUNY.  If your information literacy program is currently in process of moving over to the Framework, then please consider filling out the following form : http://sunyjefferson.libwizard.com/frameworksunylibraries . The form will allow you to upload four files, in case any of you would like to share things like new rubrics, lesson plans, worksheets, etc.  Our intention is to make these ideas, files available through Google Drive for us all to share at some point.  If you have any questions or if the survey isn’t working please let me know.

November 18, 2016 Council meeting at Albany / WGIL Report

1. We held the Teaching and Technology Conference on October 17th in Brockport. Attendance was much lower than we had hoped (about 20 people) and we decided to cancel the keynote speaker as a result.  However, as a smaller group we still managed to have some very insightful conversations.  Some of the topics discussed: how digital storytelling can improve literacy, demonstration of various digital storytelling tools, digital notebook tools, SUNY COIL and opportunities for interdisciplinary collaborations, information literacy and K12 to College transition, ACRL Framework for Information Literacy and how SUNY libraries are integrating and transitioning to using the ACRL Framework.

2. We submitted an article to the SUNYLA Newsletter to help promote the Open SUNY Information Literacy Portal and encourage more submissions, http://www.sunyla.org/sunyla_docs/newsletters/2016Nov.pdf (see page 3).

INFORMATION LITERACY PORTAL
We ran the Instructional Video Challenge and had a few results, but not as many as we would have liked. We’re currently investigating the reasons behind this and have sent out a survey to the SUNYLA list to try to determine some of the impediments.  We would like to know if this is something on which we should continue to devote energy since not many submissions have resulted.

GEN ED TASK FORCE
After completing the GenEd revision and accompanying letter, I sent it to Peter Knuepfer (University Faculty Senate) who then shared it with the executive board.  We followed up by phone. He was very supportive of our efforts, agreed that the competencies were very much outdated and indicated that the executive board felt the same.  However, they ultimately felt that the actual process of putting through a revision like this would be cumbersome and lengthy and may not even produce the kind of SUNY-wide impact that we were hoping for anyway.  He felt it would be more beneficial if we worked on promoting the competencies within our own campuses, to which I replied that most of us have and it's not working that well. He then noted that many SUNY campus are moving away from focusing on SUNY GE program and are instead turning their attention towards further developing their own local GE learning outcomes. 
 
Our suggestion at this point would be to redirect our attention away from SUNY GE entirely and focus on the idea of SUNYLA coming up with our own rubric/standards/outcomes for information literacy that all SUNY campuses can look to. This wouldn’t be something as official as SUNY GE, obviously, but it would at least provide something that SUNY librarians can use when advocating for information literacy standards on their campus.

3Ts 2016
3Ts 2016 will be happening in fall (10/18/16 @ Brockport) in a THATcamp hybrid format. The theme will be Moving Information Literacy Outside of the Library with two potential tracks for short 20-minute presentations (Authentic Tasks, Authentic Assessment). We are still working on most of the details.

Charge WGIL with creation of a rubric (if so desired)
Portal discussion (how do we encourage submissions, should we ask for help from SCLD?)
Motion for seed money ($1000) to be used as needed

Sept. 25, 2015 Council Meeting @ Monroe Community College / WGIL Update

The Open SUNY Information Literacy Portal is now part of WGIL. Here are this year's plans:

3Ts Conference:
We’ve decided to use a THATCamp format for the next 3T’s.
We're hoping to have the conference during the spring of 2016.

June 3, 2015 Council Meeting @ Purchase (Annual) / WGIL SUNY GER Information Literacy Task Force

We're sort of in limbo. Our task force sent our draft document to the leaders of the SUNY University Faculty Senate and Faculty Council of Community Colleges.

I ended up following up with Peter Knuepfer (University Faculty Senate) on the phone who indicated that the executive board had reviewed the document but was not very supportive of the idea of revising SUNY GenEd. I don't think it was because they didn't like the revision itself. I gathered it had more to do with the fact that they felt it was too much work to go through the process and weren't optimistic that it would have much effect even if we did. Our task force has actually debated this very thing during our meetings.

Instead, they're suggesting that we attempt to "promote the change on a campus level". I tried to explain that it's hard for librarians to be "heard" on campuses regarding infolit and if he really wanted that approach to work then we needed to create conversation about it at the Faculty Senate/FCCC level. He seemed to agree with that.  So, he's taking it back to the executive board.  We were supposed to touch base after the last plenary but I haven't heard from him yet.  I'll probably contact him after the conference to follow-up.

Our work is almost done. Some of you may have seen the report we sent out to the SUNYLA listserve with our suggestions for revised Information Management competencies.  We also sent the report to the FACT2 and SCLD listserves for feedback. I've attached the document below if any of you haven't seen it or want to review it again.

Not much new to report. We're in the middle of trying to schedule an online meeting to discuss our final thoughts on the revised outcomes we developed in November. Our current draft recommends splitting the outcomes into two sections, one for information literacy, one for computer literacy, instead of dumping it all under one for Information Management.

November 14, 2014 Council Meeting @SUNY Albany / WGIL Task Force

We haven't been very active since the last SUNYLA meeting.  We did complete a report with some suggested revisions, but there was still some discussion within the group and I think we're still in tweaking mode.  I did attend the SCoA meeting in late October and did a short presentation over the results of the Gen Ed survey we sent out last Fall. The feedback was interesting.  Most of the participants at the meeting seemed to feel that the computer competency definitely needs updating but that the other two, more information literacy focused competencies, are just fine as they are.

SUNY Jefferson -

We hired a new Library Circulation Coordinator, Robin Booth.  She's settling in very well.  Other than that, it's been a period of transition for us this semester now that our new dorms are complete and we have students living on campus.  We've extended hours and are now open on Sundays.
