A new Multimedia Creation Lab provides UB students with tools to create and edit videos, podcasts and other digital media projects. The Lab includes workspaces for digital editing, and the online reservation system makes it easy to borrow digital cameras, audio recorders, and other multimedia equipment.

The UB Libraries Stress Relief Days received the 2014 Western New York Library Resources Council Outstanding Library Program Award.  From the WNYLRC website:  “One of the possible guidelines for inclusion in this award is the ‘creation of a new or enhanced service model that can be emulated by other libraries…’ and Stress Relief Days has done just that.”

A new digital collection, Veterans and Armed Forces, features materials from the University Archives relating to the University at Buffalo, student veterans, the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps, and efforts undertaken by the University in response to wars and conflicts of the 20th and 21st centuries. Documentation includes photographs, manuscripts, posters and brochures chosen from various collections donated to the Archives by members of the Western New York and campus community, faculty, academic departments and the Office of the President.

Elliot McNally has joined the staff of the Poetry Collection as project archivist to catalog the editorial and business records of eleven little literary magazine archives. The project is funded by a $150,600 grant from the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR).

Associate Librarian Laura Taddeo and Stacy Hubbard, Associate Professor in the UB English Department, have received an NEH grant to support five reading, viewing and discussion programs featuring the documentary “Louisa May Alcott: The Woman Behind Little Women” and the companion biography of the same name.  Laura and Stacy will collaborate with area libraries and historical societies to develop the outreach programs in the coming months.

Our e-book purchase-on-demand pilot program is underway.  Records for over 50,000 as-yet-not-purchased e-books have been added to our catalog; the Libraries purchase a particular title after it's been downloaded twice for a short-term loan. We're excited about this patron-driven approach to collection development; the pilot should provide plenty of data for analysis.

The Libraries recently introduced two new discipline-specific versions of our Library Skills Workbook—a health-sciences version and a music version.  We now have four versions of the workbook: these two, the original, and an engineering version.

Amazon Kindles are now available in the UB Libraries. Our Kindles are pre-loaded with current bestsellers, award-winners and more, and students, faculty and staff can try them out during the e-book reader pilot project.

The search for a new University at Buffalo president is underway. Current president, John Simpson, plans to retire January 15, 2011.

The UB Libraries have unveiled a new version of the BISON catalog and students and faculty are encouraged to offer comments on the new system. The catalog uses VuFind software to offer interesting new ways to search and browse results, and includes the option of texting a call number to your phone:

Three newly refurbished collaborative study rooms are available in Lockwood Library:
