I’ll be out of the state this Friday.

From the A-48 Committee blog:

“The Appendix 48 Advisory Committee announces the completion of its charge as granted by UUP President, Dr. Frederick Kowal.

“After months of review and analysis of the feedback received by members, the committee submitted two reports outlining its specific findings.  The reports, the first of which contains the committee’s general recommendations and observations on the quality of working lives of UUP-represented librarians as per its committee charge, while the second, special report to the President outlines the committee’s contract related findings.  Both reports were submitted to President Kowal prior to UUP’s Fall Delegate Assembly.  The reports are being reviewed, and will remain confidential until such time as is appropriate for their release, however, the recommendations as outlined within the reports will inform the committee’s future work.  In the meantime, the committee is still hard at work, reviewing the 2014 UUP Librarian Equity Survey’s findings, and intends to release that analysis by the end of this current academic year.”

(I’ll say more on this topic at subsequent meetings, when I have authorization to do so.)

Dear Dr. Smith:

During the course of negotiations certain issues related to librarians were raised by UUP that were of such significant concern that review at the Executive Level is required.  As soon as practicable after a fully executed agreement, GOER, SUNY and UUP shall meet to discuss and review issues regarding librarians.  Such discussion and review may include but are not limited to titles, obligation, protected time, and compensation.  The agreement to review these issues in the labor-management forum does not constitute a waiver of any management or union right or prerogative.

Appendix-48 Advisory Committee Charge

To make recommendations to the President of UUP on issues that include, but are not limited to, titles, obligation, protected time, and compensation concerns for discussion with state representatives from the Governor's Office of Employee Relations and SUNY. The advisory committee shall convene its first meeting no later than March 1, 2014. The UUP President will initiate a discussion with state officials at the Executive Level once the advisory committee has submitted its final recommendation and information/evidence to support its recommendations.

(Liaison’s Note:  The negotiations will cover issues for both academics and professionals with M.LS. degrees or equivalent who work in libraries at UUP-represented bargaining units.)

SUNY Cortland Update

Amy Becker-George will be starting soon as our new Instructional Design Support Specialist.

SUNY Cortland is advertising for a professional Systems Librarian position.

Katie Beard in Bibliographic Services, and Loren Leonard in Instruction Technology and Design, have both departed.  We wish them the best!

Gretchen Herrmann is participating in a garage sale based exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

We are still soliciting feedback for the reference and instruction plan, with the process set to conclude in December.

I'd still like to use Buffalo as the site for any digital depository for SUNYLA materials, if possible.  At present, they are searching their University Archivist position, so some of this might have to be delayed until that person comes on board.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding this.

Lorraine Melita, Teaching Materials Center Librarian and Coordinator and Reference and Instruction, has retired.  We give her our best wishes, and she will be missed.

Ellen T. McCabe was promoted to Associate Librarian effective July 1, 2012.

Ellen T. McCabe has retired from Memorial Library at SUNY Cortland effective August 31, 2012, where she was the Humanities and History Bibliographer. McCabe received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 2008. She is the winner of three American Library Association Grants: two for the Let's Talk About It series on Jewish Literature, and one for "In a Nutshell, the Worlds of Maurice Sendak," a traveling exhibit of the renowned author's work. McCabe has served SUNYLA as the First Vice President and President from 2003-2005. A long standing member of the Publications Committee, she has Co-chaired or Chaired the committee since 2007. She has enjoyed presenting and participating in numerous SUNYLA conferences. McCabe says," SUNYLA is the most open and sharing group of librarians I have ever met. I am very happy to see new members joining the group and carrying on these traditions of innovation and cooperation with each other I will miss all of you."

Jennifer Kronenbitter has been promoted to Assistant Director.

David Ritchie will be on sabbatical for the fall semester.  Dan Harms will be on sabbatical for the spring semester.

Sara Quimby has been appointed Interim Library Instruction Coordinator.

Lisa Czirr has been appointed Interim Teaching Materials Center Librarian.

We have hired two new adjunct librarians, Lauren Stern and Richard Powell, to handle evening and weekend hours.

The consultant's report, "Evaluation and Suggestions for Reference and Instruction Services" and accompanying plan were released in May for comments from the campus.  This comment period will extend until the fall semester.

The Teaching Materials Center librarian position has been placed on hold, pending the completion of the comment period on the report.  In the meantime, Lisa Czirr has been appointed Interim TMC Librarian.

UPDATE:  Sorry - I decided the best thing to do was to get in touch with Buffalo, as having everything in the same "place" would be the best case scenario.  They're conducting a search for an archivist at the moment, but I've been referred to the interim archivist for information.

This February, the library hosted the “Abolishing the Chains of Slavery: Central New Yorkers to the Rescue.”  Sponsored by the Library, the Friends of the Library, NYS/UUP Campus Grants, and CALS, this consisted of a traveling exhibition of the National Abolition Hall of Fame and Museum, a lecture by Milton Sernett (Syracuse University), a performance by Robert Snead of Rochester, and an exhibit discussing the possible use of quilts on the Underground Railroad.

Thanks to everyone who's gotten me their archives plans.  I think the only area that still needs a plan for development is the Second Vice President, as the conference is such an important part of what we do.  With that in mind, I have contacted the current and most recent 2nd VPs for their input.

I'd also like to explore adding a page to the SUNYLA site which would direct previous members to send their documents to Buffalo, along with links to a few relevant documents.

Three publishers - for a long book, a short book, and an article in an edited anthology - all set deadlines for this month for the committee chair.  He will return to examining our needs for documentation as the fall progresses.  In the meantime, continue to send appropriate material to the archives at SUNY Buffalo Special Collections.

SUNY Cortland has welcomed John Scognamiglio to our Instructional Technology and Design Services staff.  He's been working to train our faculty during the campus transition to Blackboard.

The library will be hiring a consultant to look at reference service.  The consultant has yet to be named.

Ellen McCabe has brought an exhibit showcasing the works of Maurice Sendak to our building.
