March 21, 2014 Council Meeting @SUNY Albany / Technology Users Group
« on: March 21, 2014, 10:05:02 AM »
I have been working on creating a virtual conference space tat was inspired by the Digital Media + Learning hub: https://www.youtube.com/user/DMLResearchHub/videos

I have a site ready to go at Ignite SUNYLA (http://ignitesunyla.wordpress.com/). Anyone can submit using an ignite presentation to present in this space, but it might work better if we have themes and calls for proposal. The ignite format is 20 slides, 15 seconds. It would be a place to share ideas, tips and techniques in a shorter format among SUNYLA. I would like to try a quarterly cycle, where we can use this for proposals for SUNYLA and possible a winter virtual conference. I originally meant to get it up and running with the theme of open access, but I just couldn't get it together. I may hold off on Open Access until Open Access week later this year.

What I do need is to figure out a better way to organize more members for TUG, so I will have to focus on that in the near future.

September 20, 2013 Council Meeting @SUNY Onondaga / TUG Report
« on: September 20, 2013, 10:49:30 AM »
There was talk about putting together an Open Education Resource (OER) Virtual Conference. Now that things are settled in my family life, I will start to put this together. Plans are to aim for a Mid-Winter time for the conference. I also thought to have the virtual conference to be a gallery of "pecha kucha" presentations to be that would be made as a permanent resource. This would eventually become an annual event to match with Open Access week in October.

March 22, 2013 Council Meeting @SUNY Buffalo State / TUG Report
« on: March 21, 2013, 03:22:17 PM »
The Discover Discovery Systems Virtual Conference went well. Our final count was 84 registered, with a 85 total participants the day of the conference. Unfortunately we did not record the sessions, so we couldn't make them available. The conference web site has the PowerPoint presentations available. We had technical difficulties here and there, but I think we were able to minimize it by allowing the presenters time to prepare and use the collaborate system before hand. This experience has also shown me that there are a lot more advanced features that can make an online session more interactive. I have a few recommendations for future conferences.

1. Continue to provide a test session, or open up the Collaborate session earlier to allow presenters to practice their presentations. We actually had a test session for the whole week where presenters could practice.
2. Instruct presenters to click on the record button. The moderator can be a backup, but it makes more sense to let the presenter choose to start recording when they are ready to present.
3. Keep future events short. The longer the sessions go, the more chances of technical difficulties. I may even split future conferences into separate sessions (like conference rooms) and use a web site to coordinate sessions. This would allow for shorter recordings, allow other sessions to prepare and test while other presentations are running, and will distribute the load on the system.
4. Have presentations prepared beforehand to be uploaded into the sessions.

Jan. 17, 2013 Council Meeting @SUNY New Paltz / TUG Report

The Discover Discovery Systems mini conference is on schedule. I will report back on how it goes at the next meeting. If its successful, I recommend it as a way to host half day workshops, brown bag lunches, or quick pecha kucha presentations.

Nov. 16, 2012 Council Meeting @SUNY IT, Utica / Technology Users Group
« on: November 16, 2012, 10:23:34 AM »
Buffalo State has switched from Elluminate to the Collaborate web conferencing platform. We switched early since we record our sessions for a long period of time, and they couldn't keep storing them on the Elluminate side.

14
It looks like the switch came a little earlier than I expected. Here is the link for the SUNYLA Virtual Meeting. Due to technical difficulties early on, we had to switch to Brockports Adobe Connect:

http://brockport.adobeconnect.com/sunyla112012/

You should see a link to join the session, as well as a link to the support page, where you can test out your computer to make sure that you meet the requirements. Here is a direct link to the BB Collaborate support pate:

http://support.blackboardcollaborate.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=8336&task=knowledge&questionID=1473

I made the meeting start at 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. just to have a buffer before and after the meeting.

Sept 21m 2012 @SUNY Empire, Saratoga Springs / TUG Report
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:27:46 AM »
Started discussion about creating a TUG or Technology Track during SUNYLA 2013. I was asked to look into alternatives to Elluminate, but our campus is switching to Collaborate, so it will be available to use for these meetings. If there is still interest in an alternative, there are a few third party services, but in the end I would recommend finding a campus that can host with an existing virtual conferencing software.
