November 13, 2020 Council Meeting @ VIRTUAL / changes to bylaws & manual

Review of Bylaws and Manual of Duties & Responsibilities

I’ve been working with Carol Anne Germain and Bill Jones on revisions to the SUNYLA Bylaws, as well as the Manual of Duties & Responsibilities. We were looking to make sure they are in keeping with current practice, reflect changes previously approved, and do not contain gender-specific language. Once approved by the Council, the changes to the Bylaws will need to go on the spring ballot for approval by the membership. Changes to the Manual only require approval of the Council.

Please spend some quality time with the google docs linked below before Friday’s meeting. You can go ahead and send me any comments and suggestions if you want, or just save them for the meeting.

We've been doing limited 'curbside' pickups for physical items. Some of our regular users are SO glad to get hold of new reading material.

April Davies (me) is co-presenting a preconference session on Tenure and Promotion for the SUNYLA conference.

Katherine Brent continues to put in many hours of work as co-chair of the college's Middle States committee.

The library will be closed all summer which hasn't happened since we were shut down for renovation several years ago. We're all still working of course, mostly from home for now.

With everything going on I almost forgot about reports and updates for tomorrow. The big news at Cobleskill, as with many campuses, is that the library is closed until further notice. We are mostly working from home and only working from work 1 or 2 days a week as needed, and staggering the days so that there are no more than 3-5 people in the building at a time.

Activities:
•   February newsletter issue went out on time and was well received
•   Amanda is doing a good job with our social media presence

Upcoming:
•   Normally, the Call for Submissions for the May newsletter would go out in a couple of weeks. With our current situation I wonder if we should skip it, OR, if it’s more important than ever that we go forward. I welcome input from anyone who cares to weigh in.

Winter break has been fairly quiet at the library. Planning is underway for the library's annual spring events: the Mac-n-Cheese is Love cookoff (Feb. 14); and the Student Research Showcase (date still being discussed, probably April/May). You're all welcome to join us for the extravaganza of mac-n-cheese if you're in the neighborhood; I think we had 17 varieties last year.

The “Most Dangerous Game of Jenga.” Library Student Assistant, Korah Witherell was recently profiled in her hometown paper where, among other subjects, she discussed her role as a member of SUNY Cobleskill’s Woodsmen’s Team. For some unfathomable reason, she did not discuss working at the library.  :)  More at: http://www.oleantimesherald.com/lifestyle/timbersports-competitions-challenging-and-fun-for-portville-grad/article_1f5e538a-f207-559d-a8a0-16b8a30ea5c7.html

In campus news, Caribou Biofuels, Inc. recently entered into an agreement to develop and commercialize a portable rotary gasifier developed at SUNY Cobleskill. Over 100 people showed up to try a dozen different chilis at the library's annual Chili Cook-Off. Our next cook-off event... Mac-n-Cheese in February.

April Davies will be conducting a free allocations workshop for CDLC (Capital District Library Council) on Dec. 6th at UAlbany. Session info and registration link at: https://cdlc.libcal.com/calendar/cdlc-workshops/allocation.

Van Wagenen Library’s annual Chili Cook-off is happening October 9th. Come be a taster if you're in the neighborhood.

We are preparing to search for a new Outreach and Public Services Librarian as Mandy Babirad has chosen to move to the public library sector.

ILL and Archives Librarian Katherine Brent is co-chairing SUNY Cobleskill’s Middle States Steering Committee.

Instruction Librarian Don LaPlant’s flash fiction piece, “Safety”, was recently published by Mystery Tribune (https://www.mysterytribune.com/safety-contemporary-crime-flash-fiction-by-don-laplant). His short crime fiction has been published previously in Thuglit magazine and online in the Akashic Books Mondays Are Murder series.
