That reminds me... do we know where the 2012 Conference will be yet?

Library construction is paused until summer. They built the new instruction classroom and expanded the instructional technology training room upstairs, we moved the children's collection and did some other rearranging. Next is the other half of the top floor plus the main entrance, circ area, and the public areas on the main floor. All of which means that 99% of the collection will have to be moved out for the summer to accomodate the work. Ack! Other campus construction continues nicely. The new Environmental Science & Technology building (houses the biomass project and other related stuff) is open. The new lab wing on the science building should be done this summer and the new Ag building will get started soon (the design is really cool).

Temple Grandin will be visiting campus in May to speak at the NYS FFA Convention. The College is sponsoring a public event at Albany’s Palace Theatre on May 4. Tickets are $12 (in person at the Palace Theatre’s box office, thru Ticketmaster.com, or by phone at 800-745-3000 (handling fees apply to Ticketmaster and phone purchases).

ESPNU and ESPN2 cameras will be in Cobleskill next month! SUNY Cobleskill is hosting the Northeast Qualifier for the Collegiate and Professional Series of the STIHL® TIMBERSPORTS® lumberjack competition on April 29 & 30. The College will also have a team in competition.

Cobleskill has hired a new Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs-- Deborah Thatcher, formerly provost and dean of faculty at Lees-McRae College in North Carolina.

SUNYLA 1st VP Report
March 7, 2011

Since our November meeting I’ve mostly been working with my fellow SUNYLA delegates. Some highlights:
1.  Held online chat sessions via EtherPad (http://ietherpad.com) in December and February. Both were primarily about the Delegate Toolkit, a rough version of which is now online. The second chat generated a lot of feedback on that rough version all of which was passed on to Web Manager Katherine, who may very well have finished tweaking things by the time of our meeting.
2.  We had some technical difficulties with the first chat because the regular version of EtherPad limits to 16 participants. Who knew? I upgraded us to a Pro account and everything seemed to go smoothly the second time. Other SUNYLA groups besides the delegates can use the account. I set up the Web Manager as an admin user on the account for now, let me know if you want any others.

I’ve also been recruiting people to run for SUNYLA office. At the time I’m writing this, we have no candidates for 1st VP/President-elect.

Coming up, I’ll be attending the SCLD Spring Conference (in Cooperstown) along with Angela. Strategic planning will be the main item on the agenda, though issues related to the Nylink shutdown are sure to come up in discussion.

Respectfully submitted,
April C. Davies

Construction is progressing. We got the librarian offices and the workroom back just last week. Next up is half of the top floor, followed by everything that hasn't been done yet (which is half the building). Summer ought to be fun.

The Library continues to co-sponsor the Community of Scholars lecture series. The second one of the semester is happening this afternoon... "Carlin in Composition: The Use of Stand-Up Comedy in the English Composition Classroom."

We're in the process of hiring a new Provost. The first of the finalists will be on campus next week.

SUNYLA 1st VP Report
Nov. 19, 2010

Since our September meeting I’ve been working on a number of things related to the SUNYLA delegates, which can be a bit surreal since I am one. Activities of note:

1.  Making sure delegates are listed as such online. A dozen or so (including myself) were not listed as delegate in the membership directory. I forwarded those names on to Membership Chair Wendy West and she graciously (and quickly) fixed them. The campus directory lists delegates as well and also needs updating. That information has been forwarded to Web Manager Katherine Brent (and may very well be fixed by the time you read this).

2.  Setting up online chats. Email discussions led to the idea that we have regular online chat sessions. We’ve narrowed down schedules somewhat and are currently using a Doodle poll to pick a date/time for our first chat.

3.  And during that chat session we will be discussing the Delegate Toolkit. Carleen Huxley, Tracy Paradis, and Mary Timmons have pulled together the main elements and come up with some good enhancements. We’ll see what happens during the chat but I think it should be ready for Katherine to create this new part of our website fairly soon.

4.  Speaking of Katherine and web and delegates… I discovered that the updates to the delegates section of the Manual of Duties & Responsibilities that were approved in Nov. 2009 never made it to the website. I gave the info to Katherine and she got it fixed right away.

5.  The other thing coming up on the delegate front is getting all the delegates paid. There are several whose memberships are not current. Wendy and Treasurer Greg Bobish have verified the list and I will be contacting each of the delinquent delegates soon (if I haven’t already by the time you read this).

Also since our last meeting, I attended the fall meeting of the SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD). Most of the time was devoted to strategic planning discussions. It was interesting and occasionally quite fruitful. President Angela Weiler was there as well of course and I’m sure will have more to say in her report.

Coming up, NYSHEI (New York State Higher Education Initiative) is holding their 2nd “Summit of the Academic and Research Library Community” in December. I’ll be there representing SUNYLA and I believe one other officer is attending as well, probably Angela.

Administrative reorganization on campus has led to our Dean now running First Year Programs and the Exploratory Program in addition to the Library and Academic Support. (We're contemplating one of those gps implant things so we can find her. If it's good enough for the pet dog...)

In August, April Davies (me) spent a wonderful, challenging week at Harvard for the 2010 Leadership Institute for Academic Librarians.

We have a new Circ/ILL Clerk, Jeffrey Barnes. Jeff is replacing Brendan Aucoin who has moved on to pursue a Master's degree in English Lit at Univ. of Vermont.

Due to construction, the Library will NOT hold it's annual fall book sale. Speaking of construction... it's crazy here but we finally have a/c and bathrooms.

The Library's fall newsletter is online if you want more Coby info:  http://www.cobleskill.edu/library/fall%202010.pdf

SUNYLA 1st VP Report
Sept. 10, 2010

Two main things are on the horizon just now.

1.  Working with delegates:  I want to work on fostering communication amongst the delegates and between that group and the Association as a whole. One key element for this will be finding out what the delegates want from SUNYLA, as pertains to that role, and then seeing how I can help make that happen. A good start was made last spring with an online delegate discussion so I’m optimistic about the possibilities.

2.  SCLD fall meeting:  I’ll be attending the upcoming SCLD meeting along with our new president. I’ll be standing in for Cobleskill’s Dean as well. Between the two roles, it should be an interesting experience. I hope to pick up some good information for SUNYLA and our members.

Respectfully submitted,
April C. Davies

Cobleskill Highlights

Construction continues. The next phase is due to begin mid-August.

Katherine Brent will be presenting a poster session on reusable book bands for ILL at the conference. Stop by and give her a hard time.

The campus is in the midst of an organizational shake-up. It's not yet clear what impact this will have on the Library but initial indications are somewhat positive.
