SUNYLA President’s Report
September 23, 2011

Several things have occupied my attention since our June meeting:
•   Working with N.J. Wolfe to secure FIT as the 2012 conference site. I’m glad we’ll be downstate again and I think Manhattan will prove to be a great location.

•   Working with SCLD. The SCLD Executive Board has had two conference calls since June. The main topics of discussion have been strategic plan implementation, the content fee proposal, and the future of NYSHEI now that ARIA has been killed. SCLD will be meeting October 5-6 in Utica and I imagine these items will be discussed in much greater detail then.

•   Appointing people to various things. It feels like there were a lot of them but it was only four, some of which still need formal approval: Sarah Morehouse (2nd VP, already approved); Kimmy Szeto (LACUNY Liaison); Logan Rath and myself (SCC/SFC liaisons); Logan Rath (Continuing Ed ad hoc).

•   Listening and talking. There are some interesting things happening in our libraries and in SUNY as a whole. Some good, some not so much. In particular, the “Campus Alliance Networks” initiative has people nervous and wondering what this will mean for their campuses and their libraries. Here at SUNY Cobleskill, so far, it means sharing a president with Delhi. For Cobleskill, for now, this is a good thing. That doesn’t mean that the same arrangement is good for other schools. That has to be assessed at those schools. In my personal opinion, there are some problems, many of which stem from how this whole thing was handled by SUNY. For the libraries, again using Cobleskill as the example since that’s where I am, we’re trying to be proactive and make sure that any cooperative efforts come from us and not from administration. Which brings me to something that came up in conversation with a librarian from a different campus the other day… SUNYConnect is being used as an example of the good that can come from cooperation, as well it should. However, the thing that has made SUNYConnect a success is that it came from us. It came from the libraries and our desire to provide the best possible service and resources to our users, and if we saved money in the process, great. SUNYConnect did not come from campus or SUNY administration saying that we need to cut costs and here’s what you’re going to do. If SUNY wants to hold us up as a shining example of cooperative effort leading to collective good, then they should actually follow our example. Make it easier for us to work together rather than mandating how we do so and you’ll get a much better result.

So, what’s coming up in the next few months? Here’s what I know of so far:
•   SCLD Fall Meeting Oct. 5-6 in Utica
•   NYLA Conference Nov. 4 in Saratoga Springs (I’m only going for one day but I plan to carry my SUNYLA travel mug around with me all day!)
•   Meet with you lovely people again Nov. 16 in Manhattan :)
•   NYSHEI Summit on Advocacy for Academic and Research Libraries Dec. 8 in Albany

•   Confirm appointments
•   Funding for officer travel (forgot to do this in June, oops)

June 15, 2011

Activities since the March meeting:
1.   Finalized the Delegate Toolkit. Now online at Enhancements such as an events calendar have been requested. I’ll leave that to our incoming VP and the Web Manager to work out. Personally, I think some sort of widget would be a good approach.
2.   Attended SCLD Spring Conference (in Cooperstown) along with Angela. A lot of time was spent on possible action items for the new strategic plan. Another hot topic was the reconfiguration of the SUNYConnect Advisory Council (SAC). I think the resulting structure should work well and I’m very pleased that SUNYLA will continue to have a place in it.
3.   While at SCLD, I had some good discussions with Mary Donohue (the new SCLD Chair) and some of the other directors regarding the role their subordinates (for lack of a better term)— realizing that this is where the next batch of directors are going to come from, that we are the on-the-ground experts that will have to make their plans work, etc. While the relationship between our two groups has occasionally been strained in the past, I’m glad to say that there seems to be a growing openness in SCLD with regard to voice of the rank and file. 
4.   Which brings me to an opportunity for cooperation. Through Logan Rath, SUNYLA has been approached by the UB Library School about partnering “with the SUNY Librarians Association to devise or amplify a continuing education program for SUNY librarians.” I’ve had some email discussions with Logan, Angela, and Rosanne and we all agree that this has potential. Angela suggested bringing SCLD into the mix and Mary Donohue was enthusiastic about the idea when I contacted her. It’s part of the reason that she’ll be visiting our meeting at the conference.

Being 1st VP this past year has interesting to say the least. A lot of people have asked me if I’m looking forward to being President. My answer remains the same—maybe. Some days I can’t wait to get going and some days I can’t believe I let myself get talked into it. All in all, I think it will be good. We’ve got a great group of people on the Council and in SUNYLA as a whole. Working together, I really do think it will be good.

ACTION ITEM FOR THE MEETING: Discuss the UB continuing ed idea and decide how we wish to proceed.

Mary Donohue (FMCC, chair of SCLD (SUNY Council of Library Directors)) will be visiting our meeting. One of the things she's going to talk about is the new SUNY Libraries 3-year Strategic Plan, approved April 15th at the SCLD Spring Conference. "The Power of SUNY Libraries: A Strategic Plan for 2011-2014" was developed by SCLD, with input from SUNYLA, OLIS, and other library stakeholders. Feedback from the "Power of Tuesdays" 2010 Webinar series was also incorporated.

Since our November meeting I’ve mostly been working with my fellow SUNYLA delegates. Some highlights:
1.  Held online chat sessions via EtherPad ( in December and February. Both were primarily about the Delegate Toolkit, a rough version of which is now online. The second chat generated a lot of feedback on that rough version all of which was passed on to Web Manager Katherine, who may very well have finished tweaking things by the time of our meeting.
2.  We had some technical difficulties with the first chat because the regular version of EtherPad limits to 16 participants. Who knew? I upgraded us to a Pro account and everything seemed to go smoothly the second time. Other SUNYLA groups besides the delegates can use the account. I set up the Web Manager as an admin user on the account for now, let me know if you want any others.

I’ve also been recruiting people to run for SUNYLA office. At the time I’m writing this, we have no candidates for 1st VP/President-elect.

Coming up, I’ll be attending the SCLD Spring Conference (in Cooperstown) along with Angela. Strategic planning will be the main item on the agenda, though issues related to the Nylink shutdown are sure to come up in discussion.

SUNYLA 1st VP Report
Nov. 19, 2010

Since our September meeting I’ve been working on a number of things related to the SUNYLA delegates, which can be a bit surreal since I am one. Activities of note:

1.  Making sure delegates are listed as such online. A dozen or so (including myself) were not listed as delegate in the membership directory. I forwarded those names on to Membership Chair Wendy West and she graciously (and quickly) fixed them. The campus directory lists delegates as well and also needs updating. That information has been forwarded to Web Manager Katherine Brent (and may very well be fixed by the time you read this). 

2.  Setting up online chats. Email discussions led to the idea that we have regular online chat sessions. We’ve narrowed down schedules somewhat and are currently using a Doodle poll to pick a date/time for our first chat.

3.  And during that chat session we will be discussing the Delegate Toolkit. Carleen Huxley, Tracy Paradis, and Mary Timmons have pulled together the main elements and come up with some good enhancements. We’ll see what happens during the chat but I think it should be ready for Katherine to create this new part of our website fairly soon.

4.  Speaking of Katherine and web and delegates… I discovered that the updates to the delegates section of the Manual of Duties & Responsibilities that were approved in Nov. 2009 never made it to the website. I gave the info to Katherine and she got it fixed right away.

5.  The other thing coming up on the delegate front is getting all the delegates paid. There are several whose memberships are not current. Wendy and Treasurer Greg Bobish have verified the list and I will be contacting each of the delinquent delegates soon (if I haven’t already by the time you read this).

Also since our last meeting, I attended the fall meeting of the SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD). Most of the time was devoted to strategic planning discussions. It was interesting and occasionally quite fruitful. President Angela Weiler was there as well of course and I’m sure will have more to say in her report.

Coming up, NYSHEI (New York State Higher Education Initiative) is holding their 2nd “Summit of the Academic and Research Library Community” in December. I’ll be there representing SUNYLA and I believe one other officer is attending as well, probably Angela.

SUNYLA 1st VP Report
Sept. 10, 2010

Two main things are on the horizon just now.

1.  Working with delegates:  I want to work on fostering communication amongst the delegates and between that group and the Association as a whole. One key element for this will be finding out what the delegates want from SUNYLA, as pertains to that role, and then seeing how I can help make that happen. A good start was made last spring with an online delegate discussion so I’m optimistic about the possibilities.

2.  SCLD fall meeting:  I’ll be attending the upcoming SCLD meeting along with our new president. I’ll be standing in for Cobleskill’s Dean as well. Between the two roles, it should be an interesting experience. I hope to pick up some good information for SUNYLA and our members.
