In January, the GIST Team and IDS Project announced that the next generation of GIST tools have been released and are ready for customizing and streamlining your acquisitions, collection development, and interlibrary loan processes & workflow. http://www.gistlibrary.org/
Several staff members from Tech Services are being trained in XML TEI (Text Encoding Initiative) to markup and enrich a digital text of Walden with scholarly annotations, links, images, and social tools that will enable users to create conversations around the text. The encoding project is the core of SUNY Geneseo's Digital Thoreau initiative (a partnership with the Thoreau Society and the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods). As part of their training, staff spent 1.5 days in intense workshops led by Syd Bauman (Brown University Center for Digital Scholarship) and Kristen Case (University of Maine at Farmington, English Dept.), who visited the campus in February. Syd will return to Milne in April with Julia Flanders, a colleague at Brown, to provide advanced training to the staff and other members of the Digital Thoreau project.
Joe Easterly has joined Milne as our new Electronic Resources and Digital Scholarship Librarian.
Kim Hoffman is teaching LIS 518 Reference Sources and Services for UB at RRLC in Spring 2012.
Mark Sullivan's nomination proposal was accepted for the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE) Innovation Studio. He intends to work on project-based learning that address the “thorny challenges” faced by Liberal arts colleges. http://www.nitle.org/help/innovationstudio.php
Bonnie Swoger will be taking over as the editor for the Geosciences Information Society (GSIS) Newsletter starting with the March Issue. GSIS is the professional organization for librarians in the geosciences. She has also been busy writing, with a guest blog post at ACRLog (http://acrlog.org/2011/10/03/evaluating-research-by-the-numbers/) as well as having begun to write database reviews for Library Journal, as a part of their eReviews series. The reviews appear in most print editions of the magazine, and my reviews can be accessed online here: http://reviews.libraryjournal.com/author/bswoger/. This latest opportunity came about as a result of writing on her personal blog, The Undergraduate Science Librarian at http://theundergraduatesciencelibrarian.org.

Summer was its usual busy time with the formation of several new teams organized to streamline and manage professional travel, assessment, and user services.We continued our team development with a “Teaching with Technology” series over the summer exploring services such as Webdoc, Voki, MindMeister, and Adobe Connect. The Teacher Education Resource Center has undergone a major refresh of collection. A new “nook”- a space to interact with the collection and work on projects - and the Imaginarium, - a creative space which contains a die-cut machine, die-cuts and assorted materials for creating projects - have been established.
We have opened the Digital Media Lab (DML) which provides the ability to create and edit video and audio materials, podcasts and interactive web sites, using professional-level equipment and software for both Mac and PC computers. For details, see: http://www.geneseo.edu/dml
An online tutorial for PSYC 251 (Intro to Behavioral Research Methods) that was developed in January 2011 and sparked the initiative of Milne Library's new created Instruction Design Team of Kim Hoffman, Michelle Costello, and Corey Ha has been awarded PRIMO recognition - ACRL'sPeer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online - http://libguides.geneseo.edu/psyc251

Congratulations to Kim Hoffman, who has been promoted to full Librarian as of September 1st. This follows in the wake of her becoming our new Coordinator of Instruction and Reference Services. Rich Dreifuss retired in June after several years of dedicated service. We are currently conducting on-site interviews for two positions: Business Manager and Electronic Resources & Digital Scholarship Librarian. Coleen Hopkins has transferred to the Service Desk team from Tech Services.
Over the summer, Justina Elmore was married in a beachfront ceremony and Kate Pitcher welcomed Cordelia, her first daughter and sister to big brothers Griffin and Silas, on August 28th. Brandon Priddy, Service Desk/ Student Training Manager, has acquired his MLS in the Spring and left Milne. A new intern, Sherry Rhodes, has joined us for the Fall semester.

Ed Rivenburgh has officially retired as Director of Milne Library as of December 31, 2010. He has been hired back on a part time basis as Director of the IDS Project. Cyril Oberlander has been appointed Interim Director.
Bonnie Swoger will be on maternity leave until June. She's expecting her second daughter to arrive any time now...
ACRL has selected Kimberly Davies Hoffman and Michelle Costello to receive its 2011 Instruction Section (IS) Innovation award for their work in developing the Library Instruction Leadership Academy (LILAC). The award is given each year in recognition of a project demonstrating “creative, innovative or unique approaches to information literacy instruction or programming.” They will attend ALA Annual in the summer to collect their award.
The Library, CIT, and the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) have instituted a monthly meeting to share information and coordinate instruction/training offerings for Geneseo's faculty.
Milne's Gallery and several rooms throughout the library are currently getting new paint.

It was announced yesterday by our administration that the College will will deactivate three academic programs: computer science, communicative disorders and sciences, and studio art. The programs will be supported for the next 3 years so that those students already in those programs will finish, but no new students will be accepted. This will mean the elimination of 45 non-instructional positions throughout the college and 9 faculty positions vacated through retirements. Milne's Scholarly Communication team celebrated Open Access Week for the first time this year with a modest offering of one guest speaker from a local University and a small panel of faculty members from Geneseo talking about their experiences with open access. Sciences Librarian, Bonnie Swoger and Geoscience professor Dori Farthing presented the poster, ”Fueling Learning Outside the Classroom with Strategic Searching of the Geoscience Literature” at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting.
Tom Ottaviano, Michelle Costello, and Justina Elmore presented on Single Service Point Models at NYLA 2010 along with representatives from Librarians Charlie Cowling from SUNY Brockport and Kate Jenkins from MCC.
Donna Hanna and I are the Co-Chairs for the 33rd Annual New York State Library Assistants' Association (NYSLAA) Conference being held here June 8-10, 2010. We are getting a tremendous amount of support and assistance from the whole Milne Library Staff and are looking forward to an exciting event. SUNY Geneseo and the whole area will be a beautiful backdrop that we are incorporating into our plans for our guests. The workshops will be geared toward the needs of library assistants including technology, record maintenance, patron issues, round-tables and green initiatives, just to name a few. We are working to keep our costs in line with last year's and think the NYSLAA Conference is a real bargain in this difficult economy. Hope to see many of you in June.

Milne's major physical transformation of the Circulation, Tech Help, and Reference desks into a consolidated service point is progressing. We are currently constructing a research area adjacent to the main service desk which will have all of the appropriate technology and other materials conducive to a complete reference interview. Staff offices have been reconfigured.
With plans for tearing down the Holcomb building set in motion, our weeding & transfer project is full speed ahead. Earlier weeding has cleared space to shift some materials into Frasier and the remainder of materials not sent to Better World Books will come back to Milne.
