June 12, 2024 @ Buffalo State (Annual) / Membership Committee Report

Here are the latest membership stats for June 2024
Current members: 303
Lifetime Members: 56
Student members: 61
Delegates: 59

Membership has remained steady but low for conference time. Thanks to the delegates for helping with membership.
Leah has been having some issues with PayPal and their reporting, so there has been a lag. This, and late membership requests, have caused some problems with this year’s conference registration.

The Student Subcommittee  - The 3rd Annual Future Librarians Day (FLD) was held on Friday, April 26. This year we had 86 folks register and approximately 30 registrants at each panel (I think this is our highest to date). A recording of FLD 2024 can be found on SUNYLA's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVxKqRg1H7Y&t=6031s After FLD, all registrants received an email with a link to the recording, information on how to become a SUNYLA member (if they weren't already), and a list of resources mentioned during the panel presentations. A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to share their experience and expertise with our future librarians - I cannot wait for FLD 2025! Here's a quote from the feedback we received this year, "I really appreciate the librarians taking the time out to talk to us! I signed up for SUNYLA as soon as I left the meeting. Thank you from all us soon to be librarians!"

Student membership is still low – 61 – 40 from Albany; 6 from LIU; 4 from Queens; and 11 from UB.  No members from Syracuse or Pratt.

Respectfully,
Carol Anne

Membership has remained steady but still low for student memberships. We’ll work on messaging to recruit more. Thanks to the delegates for helping with membership.

The Student Subcommittee  - The Future Librarians Day is planned for Friday April 26. Amanda Lowe will be sending out a sign-up sheet on Friday March 22. It is hoped that the promotion of this event will lead to a boost in student membership. Also looking to schedule some "summer" workshops in May on cover letter/resume writing, as well as interviewing.

Carol Anne

We’ve had a couple of blips with the treasurer transition - Leah is great – PayPal not so much. If any one has an issue please let Leah or Carol Anne know – we can fix it in the background.

Bill Jones and Carol Anne are working on the renewal messages.

The Student Subcommittee  - no report

Membership has remained steady – we did not get a conference bump this year which is usually 25-50. Here’s a place delegates can be very helpful.
Leah’s transition to Treasurer has run smoothly for the Membership Committee.

Membership has decreased – this is unusual especially with the conference which tends to give us a bump.  Notices prompting membership renewals continue to go out monthly.

Here are the latest membership stats for November 2022
Current members: 346
Lifetime Members: 51
Student members: 100

Thanks to Adam for reaching out to the delegates (and with a little bump). Numbers are remaining consistent, but it would be nice to have a little push, so delegates - please, please, please encourage your colleagues to join.

LIS Student Committee - Committee members reached out to their respective liaison campuses at the beginning of the semester to share information about SUNYLA with LIS students. There will be a second push this month. They are planning a January resume/cover letter writing workshop and will be more active in the spring with continuing things like the resume/cover letter workshop, Future Librarians Day, and maybe a handful of other things.

Membership decreased significantly. Twenty-nine student memberships expired. The remaining gap looks like non-renewal of associate members who attended the virtual SUNYLA conference last year.

Membership remains consistent at all levels.
Bill Jones and Carol Anne (mostly Bill) worked on fixing the “joined” year in the Membership Database.  He also created a Google Form with members who had no joined year. I have been searching LinkedIn and other resources and found some but could use some help from the delegates. If yours or one of your colleagues join date is missing, let me know the answer and I will add it. Thank you!
The SUNYLA LIS Student Subcommittee met last month and discussed:
•   Promoting the annual conference and scholarships to our liaison schools
•   Future Librarians Day
o   Virtual event in mid/late April
o   Will consist of three 45-minute panels and 1-hour breakout session (panels include public services, collections/archives, and Tech Services)
o   The point of the event is to introduce different kinds of academic library positions/jobs to LIS students and to provide a space for them to connect with professionals in academic positions they may be interested in
o   Currently firming up panelists & date

Respectfully,
Carol Anne

A reminder - When a member is coming up for tenure and/or promotion, I can verify their membership and would be happy to write a letter to add to the dossier. I have done this in the past. The database does not have the start date for all members (for several reasons). If you want that added to the database, please contact me and I can amend your record.

The SUNYLA LIS Student subcommittee – no report. Certainly, there has been activity in the group with the increase in student membership.

Website – Thanks to Bill Jones, we were able to add the Member Recommendation form (Google forms) to the main SUNYLA page. This will let our delegates and other members recommend potential members to the Membership Development Committee, which will follow up on these suggestions. Bill also added the SUNYA-l Opt-out option onto the Join/Renew page. This application will automatically send a notice to Jill to update listserv membership for those who wish to be a part of this conversation. We also updated/fixed several aspects of the page/forms (e.g., form title).

Membership dipped a bit after the conference, which is normal. Special thanks to delegates for keeping up with members. And to the student subcommittee - when the connections are made, I can see a big sign up.

The SUNYLA LIS Student subcommittee
Three liaison relationships have been officially established and information about student membership and SUNYLA have been sent out. These schools are UB, UAlbany, and The Palmer School.

A non-members survey has been sent out to both UAlbany and UB students. The purpose of this survey is to see if students are aware of our organization and are interested in joining. Joan will be sending out this survey to Palmer School shortly.

We are interested in creating a student mentoring program. Jocelyn has drafted a document outlining what such a program would look like (attached) .

The subcommittee will be meeting on 9/20 to discuss liaison connections and planning two events: a resume/CV writing workshop and academic librarians panel (Future Librarians Day). We will probably start looking for volunteers to get involved with these events shortly.

Delegate Enhancement Subcommittee
The SUNYLA Delegate Enhancement Subcommittee met again in August.  Still working on ideas, including reduced rates for conference attendance and other motivators, such as meeting attendance incentives. Our next meeting is on October 8, 2021. All are welcome.

Respectfully,
Carol Anne
