SUNYLA Publications Committee

HELP WANTED!! The SUNYLA Publications Committee is looking for a few good women and/or men to bolster its ranks. With the loss of two members this year, the committee is feeling the pinch. Having more editors will make the task easier and build in some needed back-ups. The newsletter is currently created in a MS Publisher format, and then sent out in PDF form for the editors.  Ideally, we could use someone who could intake all the submissions and consolidate them (even into a word document would be a great help!)  That would allow the current editor, Jennifer Smathers, to concentrate on layout and editing and should reduce the amount of time it takes to get to a finished newsletter. Proofreaders are always needed as well; each committee member usually proof-reads certain sections of the newsletter before it goes out. Consider the Publications Committee as a way to get involved with SUNYLA!
The Publications Committee account stands at $677. Since we are in a trial period for the online only version, it should remain at or near that sum for the foreseeable future.
I am planning on stepping down as the Publications Committee Chair following the 2012 SUNYLA Conference. We do not as yet have a volunteer to take over; as I will be remaining on the committee as a proofreader, I will try to work on the transition over the summer.
The May Newsletter has come out online at the SUNYLA website at http://www.sunyla.org/sunyla_docs/newsletters/2012may.pdf
Please continue to submit items for the next Newsletter. Submissions to the newsletter are being accepted via the SUNYLA Forums at http://sunyla.org/forums/  website and via E-mail. The next issue due date is September 15, 2012. Please send items to Jennifer Smathers jsmather@brockport.edu

Respectfully submitted,

Ellen McCabe (Chair)

In Memoriam.  It is with great sadness that the SUNYLA Publications heard of the passing of Gerry Leibowitz. Gerry edited the SUNYLA Newsletter from 2004-2008. He did a wonderful job as editor and worked to modernize the newsletter, bringing it closer to the version we have today. He continued to be active on the committee after his stint as editor. Gerry, who has been a Librarian at Nassau Community College for 30 years, was a loyal member of SUNYLA. He received the SUNY Chancellor's Award, The Friends of SUNYLA Award, and has been a member of the Newsletter team for years. He will be sorely missed by the Committee.
In happier circumstances, the Newsletter experienced the loss of another member. Shannon Pritting from Oswego took a job at Syracuse University this January. Shannon had been the co-editor of the Newsletter since 2008. He will be missed.
The SUNYLA Publications Committee conducted a survey of delegates during January of this year to determine the campus preferences for print or online copies of the newsletter. In view of the results of that survey, the committee recommends moving to an online version only on a trial basis. Results of the survey are attached.
A check has been sent to Brockport printing services, for $247. Deducting that amount from the Publications Committee funds leaves a balance of $677 in the account.
The February Newsletter has come out online at the SUNYLA website at http://www.sunyla.org/sunyla_docs/newsletters/2012feb.pdf

The publications account should have about $1101.88 in it. This is assuming that the monies approved at the June meeting have been received and deposited. (I was unable to confirm this before this report.)

A potential survey for canvassing all the campuses as to their use of the paper copies of the SUNYLA Newsletter was created but I don’t believe it has been sent out as yet.

Dan Harms and I have worked on the text of a statement on publication in the SUNYLA Newsletter to reflect our policy on copyright. Since this was tabled at the last meeting, once again, I am including the text of the statement below:

“By submitting a document to the SUNYLA newsletter, you grant SUNYLA the non-exclusive right to edit, reproduce, publish, and archive the material from now into perpetuity in all formats. You retain all other intellectual property rights to your material and are free to publish it elsewhere without explicit permission from this publication. If you send it to a publisher, please let them know that it was previously published in the SUNYLA newsletter.”

I submit this statement to the Council for approval.

Many thanks from the Publications Committee to Dan Harms for his work on this.

Issues of the SUNYLA newsletter are available at the SUNYLA website; the May issue is at: http://www.sunyla.org/sunyla_docs/newsletters/2011may.pdf

Please continue to submit items for the next Newsletter. Submissions to the newsletter are being accepted via the SUNYLA Forums at http://sunyla.org/forums/  website and via E-mail. The October issue is being assembled now; the next issue due date is January 15, 2011. Please send items to Shannon Pritting pritting@oswego.edu or Jennifer Smathers jsmather@brockport.edu
