January 19, 2024 Council Meeting @ VIRTUAL / President Report

Welcome back SUNYLA and a Happy New Year to you all!

Looking ahead for this semester we have our next council meeting on March 22nd, which will be held both online and in-person at Buffalo State. Then we conclude the academic year with our final council meeting on Wednesday, June 12th also at Buffalo State and kick off the 2024 SUNYLA Conference.

Library Advocacy Day is February 7th with a planned rally in Albany. A number of NYS Assembly and Senate members will be available to meet in-person and online that day. There are also free advocacy sessions being held for free at the Renaissance. Is anyone planning on attending?

SUNYLA has worked over the course of the past few months in advocating for the re-funding of NOVELNY. Through this process we have become increasingly aware of how little of a voice we currently have when it comes to politics and advocacy for our libraries in New York State. One suggestion that has come out of our meetings this past Fall is to strengthen our ties with other New York State associations and institutions. Recognizing the importance of collaboration and shared advocacy I reached out to the NYLA Council specifically to AnnaLee Dragon (Executive Director) and Lisa Kropp (President).

The three of us met and discussed options of SUNYLA joining NYLA as an organizational member. Some benefits that would come out of this include:

Associate Memberships for Individuals
Creation of an Academic Libraries Legislative Committee
Representation in Albany and Washington D.C.
Creation of an Academic Libraries Working Group
Professional Development Opportunities
NYLA Member rates at events

Most importantly this would provide us with some much-needed political clout and advocacy that our organization currently lacks. Anna and Lisa were extremely excited about the prospects of us joining, they are very much looking for me academic library involvement in the organization. I floated the idea of possibly inviting them to one of our upcoming council meetings to discuss our options.

Just a few quick updates.

I want to thank Delegates for providing their campus updates in the forums, and for those who have not there is still time to do so. We love getting to know what you are all doing at your libraries!

The NOVELNY Task Force Meeting October 19th and OLIS Advisory Board Meeting November 13th provided some updates and action items for the continued issue of NOVELNY defunding. At this time there is a lot happening at the legislative level.
EIT Accessibility has been a hot topic of conversation lately with much of it based around higher education accessibility lawsuits, complaints, and settlements. In fact just a few weeks ago at the SUNY Library Director meeting, there was a presentation and lengthy discussion on EIT Accessibility lead by Rebecca Oling and Carli Spina. I felt strongly that this conversation was worth having with the SUNYLA Council so I invited Rebecca and Carli to present today during New Business covering EIT Accessibility issues we are facing, the support and role our libraries can play, and what our opportunities are.

As the end of the semester quickly races toward us, I want to wish everyone well as the final weeks of classes approach us. Throwing out some positive vibes onto you all to hopefully spread those vibes to your campuses and students. Which if you are like our campus is much more preferable than the COVID that is spreading.

Thank you all for your tireless work once again.

Welcome back to another academic year!

First a huge shout out and thank you to Jennifer DeVito for all her work as SUNYLA president last year, and thank you for helping me prepare for this role.

We had another amazing conference at SUNY Maritime in June. Jillian Kehoe and her team did an incredible job putting the conference together and being our hosts for those three days. SUNYLA looks forward to the 2024 Annual Conference at Buffalo State College. Charles Lyons (2nd VP) will update us on those preparations.

Looking ahead we have decided to continue the trend of holding council meetings via Zoom. Exceptions will be for the March and June meetings which will be held at Buffalo State College as well as zoom. The SUNYLA Council meeting schedule for 2022-2023 is as follows:

• Friday, September 15 @10:00AM - Virtual
• Friday, November 17 @10:00AM - Virtual
• Friday, January 19 @10:00AM  - Virtual
• Friday, March 22 @10:00AM  - Buffalo State College and Virtual
• Wednesday, June 12 @10:00AM - Buffalo State College (Annual Conference) and Virtual

Our position statement regarding the elimination of funding for NOVELNY resources was sent out. I want to thank Jennifer DeVito (Past President) and Jill Locascio (1st Vice President) for all their help in drafting this document. The position statement was sent to the New York State Division of Library Services, specifically Lauren Moore (State Librarian), to Speaker Carl E. Heastie of the New York State Assembly, and to the Office of the Governor (Kathy Hochul). The statement is also now posted on the SUNYLA blog. Of those who the document was sent to only one response has been heard so far. Lauren Moore (State Librarian) responded saying it had been received thanking us for our position on the subject.

The (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, & Accessibility Committee) IDEA Committee Creation Vote passed!
Thank you everyone for taking the time to vote in this year’s elections.

Jennifer DeVito and Adam Saunders hosted a second Delegates meeting on April 28th. Highlights of the meeting included the following:

-Review of the SUNYLA Delegate website and Delegate Toolkit. Thank you Delegates for all the feedback you provided!
-Discussion of Delegate representation at the conference. Jill came through and ordered us Delegate ribbons for name tags that same day. Thank you Jill!
-In-person delegate get together at the SUNYLA Conference. There was a lot of interest in doing a group dine out. Jill recommended Paddy’s on the Bay, a local pub/restaurant. An email went out to delegates confirming that we will have a dine out at Paddy’s on Wednesday, June 14th at 7:30PM.
-There was further discussion on use of the forums. Delegates provided a number of suggestions of alternative platforms that could be adopted to improve communication and collaboration: Slack, Discord, Groups.IO, etc

Looking ahead for next year we will plan on having another delegate meeting in August before the fall semester begins. Delegates were interested in some themed meetings during the year. One example being on putting together information for the newsletter. There was also some curiosity in having future newsletters based around a central theme. We will follow up with April Davies.

We will be holding a new member/1st SUNYLA conference meeting today (Wed. the 14th) at 5:30. If this is your first conference, you are a new member, a library school student, or you just want to stop in and say hello, please join me and your fellow new SUNYLA members.

Finally I am humbly looking forward to serving as your president for the next year.

Spring Elections

Nominations are still open for 1st Vice President/President-Elect, 2nd Vice President/Conference Chair, and Treasurer.  There has been some interest from several individuals already, but that does not mean they need to run uncontested! Any member current with their dues is eligible to run for a position. This year is also a Campus Delegate election year (odd numbered years). Delegates are free to serve consecutive terms with no term limits. Please email me at if you are interested in running or encourage one of your colleagues.  The election will open in late April.

The position terms are as follows:

1st Vice President/President-Elect: The 1st VP serves a 3-year term.  The first year of the term they serve as 1st VP and are responsible for coordinating delegates, chairing the Nomination Committee, and helping the President as needed.  The second year of the term they assume the position of President and see to the running of SUNYLA and serve as the liaison to the SUNY Council of Library Directors.  The final year of the term they serve as Past-President and advise the President as needed.

2nd Vice President (Conference Chair): The 2nd VP serves a 1-year term and is responsible for organizing the next SUNYLA conference (2020) including overseeing the various committees.  The 2nd VP will serve as a liaison between the conference library and SUNYLA.

Treasurer: The Treasurer serves for two years, and may be re-elected.  The Treasurer receives, records, holds, and distributes all monies of the Association in accordance with Policy on the Expenditure of Association Funds; maintains a record of paid members and forwards names of Delegates to the Membership Committee Chairperson; prepares a written annual statement of accounts for Membership; and makes recommendations to the Council for changes in procedures, spending limits, and policies.

End-of-Year Delegate Meeting

An email was sent out to all delegates announcing another SUNYLA Delegate only meeting in late April/early May as a sort of end of the academic year wrap up and discussion session. It will also be an opportunity to reveal changes made to the Delegate section of the SUNYLA webpage based on feedback from the previous Delegates meeting. Please fill out the Doodle Poll regarding your availability for either April 28th, May 5th, or May 12th. All starting at 10AM.

Welcome to 2022-2023 SUNYLA!

First a big thanks to everyone for this opportunity to serve as your 1st Vice President.

Emails have been sent out to current campus Delegates as a welcome to the new academic year, make sure the Delegate list is up to date, and reminders of Delegate roles and tools available. I want to welcome Justin Crossfox, Lori Wienke, and Thomas Mazza as the new Delegates representing Buffalo State College, SUNY Oneonta, and Onondaga Community College!

An email was also sent out to those campuses in which no Delegate is currently listed. We have heard back from two campuses so far, please welcome Amanda Bailey from Corning Community College and Alicia Marrese from Finger Lakes Community College.

It is never to early to start thinking about Spring Elections, March will be here sooner than you think! Seats for 1st Vice President, 2nd Vice President, and Treasurer will be open. If you are interested in running or know someone who may be interested please let me know via email. Also, with next year being an odd year (2023) campuses should plan on holding Delegate elections. Remember Delegates can run for multiple terms with no term limits.
