June 3, 2015 Council Meeting @ Purchase (Annual) / Presidents Report
« on: June 02, 2015, 10:35:22 AM »
Hi All,

In April Rebecca Hyams and I attended the SCLD Conference in Cooperstown. Some things discussed at the meeting were Open SUNY Affordable Learning Solutions (ALS). Check out the website to see what is going on with Open SUNY Textbooks; OER and MOOCS. Before the meeting there was a preconference on assessment. To learn more about SCLD/SUNYLA and assessment, attend the Assessment SIG at the SUNYLA conference on Thursday, June 5, Library 1014.

In May Jill Locascio and myself attend the METRO 3rs program “Welcome to the Profession Open House” that was hosted for brand new librarians. We mingled and chatted with the new librarians and SUNYLA donated a raffle prize of a free one year membership, a $25.00 amazon gift card, a SUNYLA bag from the Maritime conference and a water bottle from the Albany conference.

Next year SUNY Binghamton will host the SUNYLA conference.

As the year ends, so do some of the positions. Jill Locascio has been appointed as the new liaison to the METRO 3rs. We thank Katrina Frasier for her three years of service!

We are also in need of chairs for a few other positions, and Rebecca Hyams is working on this.

Thanks, it’s been swell!

SUNYLA Presidents Report, Jan. 23, 2015

Secretary

I want to thank Carrie Fishner for volunteering to take on the job of SUNYLA Secretary.

SUNYLA’s Midwinter Online Conference Committee:

Michelle Eichelberger, SUNYGenesee; Bill Jones, SUNY Geneseo; Rebecca Hyams, SUNY Maritime; Jill Locascio, SUNY Optometry; Lyndsie Robinson, SUNY Oneonta; Rosanne Humes, SUNY NCC

I want to thank the above for volunteering to be on the committee. In a short amount of time this group has put together a great conference. The virtual conference will be held Friday, Jan. 30, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. We have six sessions planned: Graphic Design for Maximum Engagement, Meggan Frost, Paul Smith’s College; Be a Databrarian! Using Weka to analyze Patron Use of Library Services, Elaine Lasda Bergman, University at Albany; Adding True SMS Service to Your Library OPAC, Juan Denzer, Binghamtom University; Screencast-O-Matic: Enhance and Expand Technology and Information Literacy Training, Gina Robinson, St. John’s University; Guide on the Side: Active Learning and Simple Design, Trevor Riley, NY State College of Ceramics/Alfred University; and Using Edmondo to Facilitate Undergraduate Preservice Teacher Connections, Michelle Costello, and Katie Rommel-Esham, SUNY Geneseo.

We opened registration in the afternoon of Jan. 7 and twenty four hours later we had 88 registrants. At the time of this report we have 161 registrants, from both public and academic libraries from all over SUNY, the country, and even from Brazil and Spain.

SCLD Conference Call

On Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, I called into the SCLD Conference call. The topic for discussions was the eventual need to get proposals from “qualified vendors to provide program and technology planning for multi-campus shared services offered through SUNYConnect in support of ongoing needs of SUNY Libraries.”
Maureen from OLIS was looking for direction from SCLD on developing a strategy on how to re-evaluate services and predict the types of services that would be needed so that OLIS could write the RFP.

The focus of the discussion came down to should they hire a consultant or look inside SUNY for a project lead, and what kind of person should do this (faculty, librarian, library consultant).

A Discussion took place, and it was decided by Maureen that she will revisit her original thoughts and come up with a ‘skill set’ that we would want to see in a project leader, and focus on the reevaluation of services and transitional strategies.

The talk turned to the upcoming SCLD meeting, April 17-17 to be held in Cooperstown. SCLD is considering having a pre-meeting on assessment.

UPCOMING MEETING DATES

March 13, 2015 – Purchase (Please note this meeting date was changed from March 20)

Presidents Report
Some events I have attended as SUNYLA president since last meeting.

Sept. 30 – ALLN metro meeting Katrina

Oct. 6 – Pratt student mixer with their School of Library and Information Science. We brought 50 copies of our brochure, and because there wasn’t enough time to purchase swag, I made SUNYLA labels (Using mailing labels) and wrapped them around Hershey’s chocolates, and used that as give-a-ways. Katrina will give a full report on that.

Sept 22-24 – SCLD Meeting – I was unable to attend. Rebecca attended and she will give a full report.

Nov. 10 – ARCHIVES AND LIBRARY LEADERSHIP NETWORK OF NEW YORK CITY Fall Event “Exploring New Territory for Collective Impact”
SUNYLA’s own Carol Anne Germain was a speaker! Katrina will give more details on this.

Secretary

I don’ now if you heard by now, but Emily Thompson, our secretary, has accepted a position at the University of Tennessee Chattanooga. Rebecca and I are compiling a list of candidates for the secretary position, and be prepared I might be calling on one of you soon! If anyone is interested in this position, please contact me by email. It is a 2 year position that requires you to: attend all of the meetings; send emails announcing the meetings; contact campuses that are hosting the meetings for meeting info; create an agenda for the meeting; and record the minutes. I might have forgotten some things, but I want you to know that it is a big job and a big commitment. But it looks good in a promotion folder!

SUYNLA Virtual conference

The virtual conference team, which consists of:  Michelle Eichelberger, Genesee;  Jill Locascio, SUNY College of Optometry; Rebecca Hyams, SUNY Maritime;  Bill Jones, Geneseo; Lyndsie Robinson, Oneonta;  Rosanne Humes, NCC; has been very busy in a short time. We have finalized our date for the conference; it will be on Friday, January 30th at 10 am. We will be using GotoWebinar. Our title is “DIY Toolbox: Library Innovation on a Shoestring.” We have sent out the call for proposals last week to over 20 different listservs, and we already have a few proposals. The deadline for submission is Monday, December 1, 2014.

Virtual Conference

SUNYLA hosted its first virtual conference on Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, from 9 am to noon. The title was “Discover Discovery Systems @ SUNYLA.” Ken Fujiuchi, Buffalo State, set-up and arranged the conference. Mark McBride, Buffalo State, served as our moderator for the day. We experienced a few minor technical difficulties, but I think it ran well. We had 84 people registered for the conference. The slides from the presentations, plus all of the conference info, can be found at http://discoverdiscoverysystems.wordpress.com/.

SCLD Conference April 17-19.

The SCLD executive board is still planning the agenda for the April meeting. I will not be able to attend, but April Davies will go in my place.

SUNYLA Presidents Report – January 17, 2013

NYSHEI

NYSHEI and SUNYLA have signed a Statement of Cooperation, with the intent of Furthering the interests and goals of both organizations. Both I and Sarah (1stVP/Pres. Elect) signed the agreement, as well as Jason from NYSHEI.
As per the agreement, Jason will be attending our meetings and giving us reports. He will also be writing articles for the SUNYLA Newsletter. He will also be attending our conferences each June, and we will provide him with a space/table.
I will have attached a copy of the agreement here, and I will be sending the original to the archives.

ADVOCACY SUMMIT

Sarah and I attended the Advocacy Summit of the Academic and Research Library Community sponsored by NYSHEI and held in Albany on December 6, 2012.

Other groups that attended were NYSL, NY3Rs, NYLA, NYSHEI, ENY ACRL, CCCL, CUNY OLS, UNY SLA, ConnectNY, ASLS of NYLA, NELLCO, SCLD, & UNYOC.

The purpose of the meeting, as always, is to find ways to work together and support each other’s missions. The point was made that as groups we need to communicate and work together to increase our strengths and decrease overlap.

Jason discussed the state budget and the federal budget mentioning that  Hurricane Sandy will make the budget situation worse than before. The deficit for next year is expected to grow to $1B without considering the impact of Sandy. It’s expected that there is going to be even less state money to go around next year than this year.

Each group reported on projects that they were working on. Sarah discussed the ILST Certificate Program.

Bernie Margolis, NYSL, had a lot to say. His biggest “idea” was that we as a group should start creating our own databases (he used Opposing Viewpoints as an example of what he would like to see librarians create.) There was a lot of discussion on this, and most of the group did not agree that our mission was to ‘create’ databases.

SCLD was asked about their decision to split from NYSHEI. Some groups around the table indicated that their libraries still planned on supporting NYSHEI on their own.

NYLA and NYSHEI both discussed the possibility of NYSHEI becoming an arm of NYLA. The Executive Director of NYLA also said that NYLA wanted to get more involved with being and advocate for academic libraries.

There was talk among the groups about Discovery products, and LACUNY seemed especially interested in the state going for a statewide discovery system.

COMMITTEE WORK

At my request, Logan has added a section in the SUNYLA website, called ‘Council Area’ . Once you click on it, and enter the username a password, you can use the drop down ‘View Committee Interest’ to see who has expressed an interest to join a committee. I request that all committee chairs use this function to contact people who have show a desire to be part of your group. Logan and I discussed the idea of whether we needed to change the password for the area, and we decided to bring it to the group.

Next Meeting Date

Our next meeting will take place at Buffalo State, on Friday March 22, 2013.

SUNYLA President’s Report – November 12, 2012

SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD)

I attended the Fall meeting of the SUNY Council of Library Directors, on Oct. 14-15, 2012, at FIT in Manhattan.
Sunday’s meeting was divided into sectors and I went to the Community College Sector meeting. The following items were discussed:

•   Shared electronic nusing ebook collection. Survey will be sent after thanksgiving to see interest from community colleges.
•   Empire Delivery service – smaller community colleges stated they could not afford to pay the 3rs 2500 a year. They would like to see regional ill processing centers. The sector endorsed a motion for tiered pricing for delivery service.
•   Sector endorsed the Single Bib initiative

Comprehensives Sector Report

The Comprehensives put a motion (that was not voted on) that SCLD will organize a taskforce charged with developing SUNY Library strategies that focus on content curation and other services to support Open SUNY.

Doctoral Section Report

•   University of Buffalo will investigate the possiblty of their college being a repository for ‘last copies’.
•   Content fee discussion has progressed. The provost is still interested in a content fee and would like to see it as part of the tech fee structure.  It should be collected centrally and sent to SUNY.  This fee would be used to acquire a set list of resources that John Schumacher has assembled from SCLD librarians. At present John has a wish list worth $9,000,000.  Carey discussed how this would work through the budget office.  This would be for university centers and comprehensive colleges, and not for the community colleges.

Monday’s Agenda

Monday’s meeting began with Carey and John discussing the formation of the Single
Bib and Discovery Tool Task Force’s. (john can speak on this at the meeting if he would like!)

Jason Kramer, NYSHEI, spoke to the group outlining his 2013 plan (the same one he gave to us at our Sept. meeting) and then mentioned that he was in talks with NYLA to merge with them in lobbying efforts. I’m not sure what this means – but perhaps someone else who was at the meeting can help clarify this (John?)

Then, a lively discussion on NYSHEI took place (see motion below).

There was a discussion on what makes a core service.

During the business meeting the following motion and was and passed:

Be it resolved that NYSHEI membership will no longer be a core service of    SUNYConnect, and that after January 31, 2013, SUNY libraries may choose to continue their memberships individually.

NYLA Conference

I did not get to attend the conference due to Hurricane Sandy.

APOINTMENTS

I have appointed Jennifer Kegler, SUNY Brockport, Chair of the Newsletter Committee.

Upcoming

Advocacy Summit – Sarah and I will be attending the Advocacy Summit sponsored by NYSHEI on Dec. 6, 2012.

Next meeting dates

We will discuss possible dates and venues at our Nov. meeting.

Respectfully submitted,
Rosanne

SUNYLA President’s Report – Sept. 21, 2012

SUNY Council of Library Directors (SCLD)
I have had two phone meetings as part of the SCLD executive board.
July 18, 2012

The billing of Empire Delivery services was discussed. SCLD voted to keep it a core service, so OLIS had to get a contract with Empire. As a result 1st semester bills had to be paid directly to the vendor or through your local 3r. Next quarter bills will be included in our SUNY core service bills.

SCLD voted that they would only pay half of their annual fee to NYSHEI to show their displeasure, thinking they were paying for a full year’s service at half price. NYSHEI informed them they were not allowed to do that, so they would only have a half year’s membership – as of now all SUNY NYSHEI memberships will end on Jan. 31, 2013.

The Fall SCLD meeting will be at FIT, Oct. 14-15.

OLIS recommended two new task forces – Shared Catalog and Discovery System

Sept. 11, 2012

This phone meeting was to set the schedule for the Fall meeting. Topics to be discussed: NYSHEI; two new task forces; Center for Intellectual Property; GSU & e-reserves.

NYSHEI

As requested by the council last June, Jason Kramer will be starting off our Sept. meeting.

METRO

I will be attending the Sept. 27 Regional Professional Leadership Network meeting at METRO (3R) in Manhattan.

APOINTMENTS

I have appointed Pam O’Sullivan from Brockport to be the new chair of Personnel Policies Committee. I am actively looking for someone to be the new liaison to IDS.

Our next meeting will be held at SUNYIT on November 16, 2012.

METRO meeting

On Feb 14 I attended the Regional Professional Leadership Network Meeting, sponsored by the Metropolitan New York Library Council (METRO). METRO is one of the nine regional 3Rs Councils. Ten local library groups attended the meeting: METRO; LACUNY; Archivists Roundtable of NY; SUNYLA; ACRL/NY; Medical Library Assoc. NY/NJ; American Society for Information Science & Technology; NY Technical Services Librarians; New York Library Club; and SLA/NY.

The focus of the meeting was collaboration. Metro introduced the “Community Partners Program.” The purpose of the program is to further existing relationships between METRO and local and regional organizations and to encourage collaboration and sharing of assets toward the mutual benefit of all organizations. The benefits of joining – being listed as a community partner on METROs webpage (with a link to our website); co-hosting events; a free membership for one leader in our organization.

At the meeting I encouraged all groups to sign up for a table at the SUNYLA conference.

Call for host for 2013 conference

On March 1st I put out a call looking for a 2013 host campus for the SUNYLA conference. So far, they has been no interest. At Mark McBride’s suggestion I’m working on a ‘check list’ of host campus requirements. When this is finished, we plan to add it to the SUNYLA website.
