September 20, 2013 Council Meeting @SUNY Onondaga / MVCC

We're in the process of making some staffing changes with our part-time reference positions.  Ann Hyland, who until now was covering a couple of night and weekend shifts for us, will fill some of the day time reference shifts in Utica from Monday to Friday. Additionally, Sarah Schultz (a recent graduate from SUNY Albany), has been hired to work some week night and weekend hours.  It's great to have new people join us!

There is not much to report from MVCC libraries since our post-summer report.  It's all about library instruction and reference at this time of the semester.  The librarians are in the process of coming up with a workflow for weeding throughout the year, as opposed to doing it intensely only during the summer break.  Our ILL service has seem a significant increase in activity since we joined IDS, so we are trying to make staffing adjustments.

It’s been a productive summer at MVCC Libraries:
- We began the process of joining the IDS Project.
- We redesigned our library web site.
- We added a lot of titles to our ebook collections.
- And of course, there was weeding...

The library is taking advantage of the current Spring Break to finalize the library renovations that were started during the January holiday, with the addition of the last pieces of furniture (including a new circulation desk and reference area furniture).  The progress can be seen here: http://www.facebook.com/MVCC.Libraries.

MVCC will be hosting the ENY/ACRL Spring Conference on May 21st, 2012.  The day's schedule is available at http://enyacrl.org/site/ and the theme is "Measure for Measure: Exploring Library Assessment".

Alana Verminski  joins our staff working as part-time librarian.  Alana recently returned to Central New York after receiving her Master’s Degree in Information Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.  She will assist us in maintaining our Facebook page for the MVCC Libraries as well as working to enhance other outreach efforts.

Mohawk Valley Community College’s Cultural Series will present Maya Angelou as the keynote speaker of its Fall 2011 season.  Dr. Angelou will appear Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m. in the 2,800-seat field house at the new Robert R. Jorgensen Athletic and Event Center, becoming the first Cultural Series act to appear in the newly completed showcase building on MVCC’s Utica campus.

Last December, MVCC's Board of Trustees approved a retirement incentive for all employee groups.  Consequently, 15 employees retired this spring.  Among them was Sherry Day, who had worked at the library for 42 years!  She spent the last 22 years as ILL clerk.  She is being replaced by Aiko Kane, former part-time circulation clerk, who will now work in ILL and oversee the Course Reserve.

Stephanie Reynolds will be our new Vice President for Student Affairs, starting on July 5.  She currently serves as the Vice President for Student Services at Onondaga Community College.

We hired a new part-time librarian.  Nancy Becker joins our staff working at the Utica Campus Library.  Nancy recently accepted a retirement offer from St. John’s University, where she was an Associate Professor in the Division of Library and Information Sciences.  She was looking to remain active professionally providing reference in an academic setting.
