We are pleased to announce that Barbara Shaffer is our new Library Director. After a year as Interim Director, in May she assumed her new position as Library Director at Penfield Library. Barbara holds a Master’s of Library Science from Syracuse University and Master of Science (Education/Music) from the University of Wisconsin – Madison. In her new role, she plans to work closely with faculty to promote student learning and to ensure that when students leave Oswego, they take with them strong skills in information seeking and evaluation for lifelong learning.

Chris Hebblethwaite is now the Coordinator of Reference.

Tina Chan has been named the 2012 Emerging Leader sponsored by the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association.

Michelle Bishop joined Penfield in April as our First Year Experience Librarian. 

Our director search was completed and we are happy to report that Barbara Shaffer is our new Director.

A rennovation of Penfield's front lobby/entrance area will take place in late summer or early fall.

We have digitized campus commencements from 1992-2006 and several Safe Haven oral histories from some of the refugees from Europe who were placed in an internment camp at Fort Ontario during World War II.  http://www.oswego.edu/library/archives/digitized_collections.html#videos

Our newest librarian, Michelle Bishop, First Year Experience Librarian, will be starting in late April.  Our Middle States visit will take place in early April.  Penfield welcomed the Writing Center to the library in February.  In addition to holding writing tutoring sessions in the library they also have an office in our building.

New staff at SUNY Oswego -- Emily Thompson will be joining Penfield as our new Learning Technologies Librarian on October 3rd.

Building improvements included replacement of our roof, carpets and elevator during the summer.  New opening time 7:45am during the semester and quick print stations so students can easily print what they need.  We continue work on renovation planning for the library.

Mary Bennett, our Documents Librarian, will be retiring in July after many years at Penfield.  Library Director interviews will be starting shortly.  Current construction projects at Penfield Library include a new roof and new elevator. We are preparing for Middle States review.

Mary Beth Bell retired at the end of December 2010 as Library Director.   She has been hired back on a part-time basis as Library Director.  A Library Director Search Committee has been formed and ads will be out shortly.

During spring semester we are administering the James Madison University Information Literacy Test.

We’re running a pilot project for e-book readers and have purchased 3 kindles and a nook.

Summer construction plans include new roof, elevator and carpeting in the library.

Leah Galka has been hired as a part time reference librarian.  She is a recent graduate of Syracuse University.  We are currently in the process of hiring a full time 1 year temporary Librarian.

We will be searching for a new Director and Art Librarian in the spring as both are taking advantage of the early retirement offer.  Our Director will continue working some hours during the spring semester until the search for a new Director is complete.  Laurie Clemo is our new Interim Provost.

Our library program study is moving along with Sasaki Inc. of Boston.  WTCox is our new serials vendor starting Jan. 2011.  We are working on the implementation phase of LibGuides.

At Penfield Library, construction has just begun on a new roof.  Additionally construction of an environmentally controlled storage space in our basement will begin this Fall. 

Two new group study rooms have been added on the first floor.  They contain large flat screen monitors so students can work in groups using multiple laptops. 

We are now using ARES as our e-reserves system. 

As of today retirements at the end of September include two CSEA library staff.  More retirements are expected in December. 

The IDS conference was held at Oswego in August.
