Professional Development – Year-end report
The Professional Development Grants Subcommittee received nine (9) applications for funding this year.  Eight (8) applications were approved for full funding and one (1) application was approved for partial funding.  On approved applicant will receive funding from the next fiscal year as the activity takes place over the summer months. We began with a $3000 budget and with the generous support from SUNYLA’s Board, added $2000 on 4/9/18 to address the high number of applicants.  We ended the year with a $1300 balance.
The following professional development activities were supported by our grants:
1.   Attendance and Committee participation at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting in Denver, Colorado.
2.   Presentation and/or attendance at ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans.
3.   Presentation and attendance to Distance Library Services Conference in San Antonio, Texas.
4.   Attendance and presentation at the Librarian’s Information Literacy Annual Conference in Liverpool (UK).
5.   Presentation and attendance to the Art Libraries Society (UK and Ireland) Annual Conference in London.
6.   Presentation and attendance to SUNYLA’s Annual Conference.
Several unique issues were addressed this year:
1.    Applicants applying for activities taking place over the summer months can be approved.  The approval would take place in one fiscal year (2017-2018) and the monies would be disbursed in the next fiscal year (2018-2019).
2.   The question of whether the subcommittee should fund members attending SUNYLA events was addressed. The subcommittee overwhelming decided to keep the policy “as is” and evaluate each request on a case by case basis.
Lisa Errico, Professional Development Grants Subcommittee, Chair

Sylvia Chu Scholarships – 4 were awarded- to Morgan Bond, Laurel Scheinfeld, Amanda Wentworth, and Mona Ramonetti. There were no Daniel Kissane applicants.

Michelle Bishop will be the new SUNYLA Scholarship Subcommittee Chair starting in Fall 2018

Respectfully submitted,
Kim L. Myers

The SUNYLA Professional Development Grants Subcommittee is pleased to announce the approval of two recent grant applications.

Carrie Fishner, Director, Resnick Library at SUNY Delhi received a $500.00 grant to attend the ALA's Annual Conference, New Orleans, Louisiana, June 21-26, 2018.

Laura Harris, Online Learning Librarian at SUNY Oswego received a $500.00 grant to attend the 18th Distance Library Services Conference, San Antonio, Texas, April 10-13, 2018.

Respectfully submitted,
Kim Myers

In October, the SUNYLA Professional Development Grant committee approved full funding of $500 to Curt Friehs, of SUNY College at Old Westbury, to attend the American Library Association’s Mid-Winter Conference in Denver, Colorado in February 2018. Curt currently serves on the RUSA-CODES Outstanding Reference Sources Committee.

Respectfully submitted,
Kim Myers

Attached is the 2017 report from the Professional Development Committee.

The professional development committee has been busy this month. The Grants subcommittee approved two grants:
Name:             Josh Rimmer
                        Circulation Supervisor
Institution:    SUNY Cobleskill

Amount:      $350.00

Proposed Activity:
Registration and attendance to University of Milwaukee's online metadata course, Linked Data for Beginners. This course begins on March 6, 2017 and ends on April 28, 2017.

Name:                       Yu-Hui Chen
Bibliographer and Outreach Librarian for Education & East Asian Studies
Institution:                University Libraries, University at Albany, SUNY
Amount:                    $500.00
Proposed Activity:   Attendance and presentation at the ACRL Conference in Baltimore, MD.
The scholarship committee met in February with a number of new members, to discuss procedures and timelines for the Sylvia Chu and Daniel Kissane scholarships. We had a few items we needed Council to address:
1.   What is the date you need the list of suggested recipients for each award?
2.   What is our budget for the scholarships this year?
3.   Because it is always such a challenge to get candidates for the Daniel Kissane Scholarship (for graduate students), we would like to consider accepting applications from a larger pool by soliciting candidates from schools outside NYS. There may be NYS residents who attend an out of state school online.

Respectfully submitted,
Kim Myers

The full committee with many new volunteers will meet in October. So far this year, $405.00 was awarded to Mila Su, Associate Librarian at SUNY Plattsburgh to attend an ACRL Immersion program from the Professional Development Grant fund.
