Acquisitions Librarian-extraordinaire Rosanne Humes was recently prompted to full professor!  ;D

NCC Library recently established a new student space on the first floor. This area also houses our new display shelves- filled with dvds, popular fiction and non-fiction books being used in our RDG/BEP program. Rosanne Humes and Lisa Errico have worked diligently to establish this new collection and clearly label each book to indicate if we also have the eBook and/or audiobook version available for student use.

Nassau Community College:

NCC’s annual Collection Development Day will be held on February 10. This popular event gives faculty members a chance to stop by the Library for lunch and discuss ways to help build our collection.
The Library will also be getting some new digital signage this semester  :)

Nassau Community College-
After piloting it for several semesters, NCC Library officially implemented the Papercut print management system this semester. This system helps encourage responsible printing practices. Students are granted a non-refundable print quota of $15 at the start of each semester for printing in the library and other open computer labs on campus. If students exceed this quota, they can purchase additional printing capacity by using one of several kiosks to add money to their account.

Congratulations to Rosanne Humes and Richard Delbango! They were both recently awarded sabbaticals which will take place during the first part of 2014.

Katrina Frazier and Rosanne Humes were awarded the NEH/ALA grant entitled “Bridging Cultures: Muslim Journeys Bookshelf.” This grant will allow the A. Holly Patterson Library to provide access to a collection of books, films, and other resources that will introduce the American public to the complex history and culture of Muslims in the United States and around the world.

Nassau Community College-
The effects of Hurricane Sandy have left many of our faculty, staff, students and neighbors without homes, power and clean water. In a continued effort to help the community, several governmental agencies are temporarily being housed on campus. This includes the Red Cross Shelter, FEMA and the Small Business Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services.

Just in time for the fall semester, the NCC library recently launched its new streamlined and mobile friendly website: library.ncc.edu.
After 21 years serving as Nassau Community College's Coordinator of Distance Education, Professor Arthur Friedman, Ed.D. has returned to his roots in the Library as a reference librarian.

Our library has also implemented EBSCO’s Discovery Service. This allows students and faculty to search our collection through a single simple search box.

We have also started using LibAnswers. Students and faculty can now text us questions in addition to sending emails or chatting.

NCC library is now piloting a print management system. This system will help us encourage responsible printing practices. Students will be granted a free print quota at the start of each semester and will only be charged if they exceed that quota. Currently there are no charges since this is a pilot. We expect to implement actual charges in spring 2013. We are hopeful that this will give us better control over printing in the library.

As Rosanne Humes mentioned in an earlier email, SUNYLA member and NCC librarian Gerry Leibowitz passed away very suddenly on February 28th. We are currently working to establish a scholarship in Gerry's honor. We would like to thank everyone for the many condolence emails we received over the past week and a half. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Congratulations go out to two Nassau librarians that were promoted this fall. Rosanne Humes, Acquisitions, has been promoted to Associate Professor and Linda Gorman, Reference, has been promoted to Full Professor.

NCC just completed our participation in a five year Title III Grant Project. Under the distance learning component of this grant, the library was asked to offer a series of faculty workshops that introduce an array of online resources that would support distance education courses. From the spring of 2008 through early fall 2011, the NCC library offered over twenty-five workshops on a variety of resources including: Turnitin.com, Films on Demand, Federated Searching, EBSCO databases and LibGuides.
