The Scholes Library at the College of Ceramics is hiring a Public Services and User Experience Librarian! You can read about the position on our blog, among other places:

This is a 12 month, non-tenure track position, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming a new public services librarian into our number. Following up on our news from last time, the Scholes Library is pleased to announce that repairs and renovations after the spring’s basement flood are proceeding. The computer classroom space, which was too small, enclosed, and outdated for our needs, has been transformed into an open workspace. The new space is more flexible in terms of function, and features a wall covered in whiteboard paint, transforming the entire surface into a work area.

Additionally, the Harry Potter’s World event series mentioned in our previous update is in full swing! The series began with an opening reception on September 1st—not coincidentally the first day of school at Hogwarts!—but a smaller group of incoming students got to kick things off early with a Horcrux Scavenger Hunt in August.
 
As part of the Harry Potter’s World exhibit, our Hogwarts U. lecture series has also taken off, with attendance exceeding our room limitations at almost all events! Thus far, our lectures have included a Potions class (“What If Magic Were Real?”), two Herbology lessons (“Counteracting Spells Using Classic Chinese Herbal Formulas” and “Herbology 101: How to Identify Plants”), and a Muggle Studies Lecture exploring the social science and psychology of Harry Potter in the muggle world. Seven more lectures and demonstrations are upcoming, including a live owl demonstration this Thursday, the 24th.

The Harry Potter’s World series isn’t all work and no play, though—students, faculty, staff, and community members have gathered together at a well-attended Harry Potter Trivia Night and a movie showing. Finally, community institutions outside of the university have joined in, including the Box of Books public library and the local farmers market, which hosted a Hogsmeade Market day this past Sunday.

Four of us here at Scholes/the College of Ceramics will be headed to Purchase this week, which is all but one to hold down the fort--looking forward to seeing everyone!

Renovations continue on the Engineering floor after our flooding issue this winter. We are on track to be complete by fall.

In other areas of the library, following SUNY ESF's hosting of the same exhibit, Scholes will be hosting a series of events surrounding the National Library of Medicine's "Harry Potter's World" exhibit. We're planning a wide range of events, including a Horcrux scavenger hunt, opening reception, talks and lectures, live animal demonstration, student art exhibit, and closing Halloween Ball. Several local public libraries will also be participating with their own concurrent events.

As previously mentioned, the Visual Resources Slide Library is undergoing an extensive update and redesign. This process is now nearly complete, and the newly remodeled workspace is now a laboratory/classroom for digital production, format conversion, digital preservation, experiments in gaming, and student collaborations.

Eva Sclippa, Art Librarian and Coordinator of Instruction, is co-author of a newly published article in the journal Art Documentation, the official journal of ARLIS/NA. “Where Visual and Information Literacies Meet” describes the authors’ efforts to consistently assess their art history information literacy program.

Trevor Riley, our new Engineering and Emerging Technologies Librarian, is excited to be presenting at the SUNYLA Midwinter Online Conference. He will be speaking about Guide on the Side, a tutorial software that allows librarians to create tutorials that patrons can view side by side with the library website.

The library will soon be receiving a large number of new, high quality books on Japanese art, thanks to a grant secured by Art History Professor Meghen Jones and Art Librarian Eva Sclippa. The grant, provided by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies, will greatly expand and refresh our current offerings on Japanese art and architecture.

Hello everyone from the College of Ceramics! 

Trevor has now officially started here as our Engineering and Emerging Technologies Librarian, which has been a great help.

This fall term, the Scholes Library has been part of a new Personal Librarians Program developed across the Alfred University campus libraries. Each first year student has been assigned his or her own Personal Librarian to be their go-to person for all their research needs. Librarians have been assigned according to each student’s School/College/Major.  All first year students have received packets explaining the program, along with “trading cards” of their librarian and information about that librarian’s “persona.”
   As part of the program, each participating librarian worked to create one of these fantasy personas, which were then illustrated and featured on trading cards.
   The program has thus far been a definite success, with students actively collecting the cards, coming to meet their librarians at the personal librarians dessert reception, and beginning to contact their librarians with questions.  For more information, see the Alfred University Library News blog post on the topic: http://aulibrarynews.wordpress.com/2014/08/11/whos-your-librarian/

Here at Alfred we're undergoing some major renovations to what are currently the slide room and seminar room on the second floor of the Scholes Library.  These two adjoining rooms are being upgraded and expanded to accommodate a new computer lab and a combined seminar/media viewing room, while maintaining the slide collection in a separate, climate-controlled room.

The new computer lab will help facilitate library instruction and also be available as a classroom for Art History, Art and Design, and Engineering faculty to use for research and student projects.  The lab will remain open and accessible during library hours for students to use.  The expanded seminar room will seat 24 and allow for both media viewing and student or faculty presentations.

We're also pleased to welcome Trevor Riley as our new Engineering/Emerging Technologies Librarian.  Trevor joins us from the Library at The United States Coast Guard Academy in New London CT. where he currently serves as Reference and Instruction Librarian.
