March 10, 2017 Council Meeting @ Stony Brook / Re: Campus Updates GCC
« on: March 09, 2017, 09:08:55 AM »
Nina Warren has announced her intent to retire at the end of June this year.  Nina first started at GCC as a part-time librarian in 1992, becoming full-time in 1993 and she then became Director of Library Services in 2007.  She has been a campus leader among supervisors and is a positive role model for all.  Under Nina’s leadership, the library transitioned to a 7-day-a-week operation in response to student demand.  Nina's position has been posted and applications are being accepted until March 19. For additional information, including qualification requirements and application instructions, go to https://genesee.interviewexchange.com/jobofferdetails.jsp?JOBID=81273.

Nina's retirement is our big news. Other than that, we've been hosting exhibits and doing themed roving, and you'll see more info about that in the next SUNYLA newsletter.

Progress is continuing on the campus's new Student Success Center and the Richard C. Call Arena, with completion scheduled for Summer 2017.

Library staff members Laura Peck, Sarah Karas, and Cindy Hagelberger led a trivia night event at the college's new campus housing gathering spot, The Root: http://www.genesee.edu/library/library-news/trivia-night-at-the-root/

The library has hosted several exhibits over the past two months, coordinated by librarians Cindy Francis and Cindy Hagelberger: Election Exhibit, Celebration of Native American Heritage, 2d Design Exhibit "Tableaux", and a Domestic Violence Awareness Month Exhibit. You can see photos of all these on our library blog (http://www.genesee.edu/library)

We've also run two successful themed roving weeks: Health Literacy and Harry Potter's Fantastic Beasts. For each week, a volunteer librarian designs and creates a themed bookcart and prepares material for a week-long trivia contest. Photos are on our blog.

Nicki Lerczak has set up a series of Plagiarism and Citation Help drop-in sessions in order to provide an extra option for help for students at the end of the semester.

Michelle Eichelberger will be serving on the SUNY Library Services Platform Evaluation Team.

Librarians Cindy Hagelberger and Nicki Lerczak were both promoted this summer. Nicki is now a full professor, and Cindy is an assistant professor.

Michelle Eichelberger’s article, “Academic technology confidence levels vs. ability in first-year traditional and non-traditional undergraduates,” co-authored with Bonnie Imler, was published in volume 34, issue 3 of Library Hi-Tech. Michelle and Bonnie have also been contracted to write a book about usability and discovery systems for the Innovative Libraries series for ABC-CLIO's Libraries Unlimited imprint, due to be published Spring 2017.

On June 9, Cindy Hagelberger presented a poster session entitled: Taking it outside: Interacting with librarians outside of their usual habitat! at the 2016 SUNYLA (SUNY Librarians Association) Conference held at SUNY Binghamton.  The poster described the library’s themed roving weeks which engage students outside the library with book displays and trivia contests celebrating, among other events, the release of the new Star Wars movie and the summer Olympics.

Year of UX: the library kicked off our Year of UX during the week of September 5. We’ve begun by conducting surveys at the campus centers and at the Batavia campus’s College Club Fair.  Over the 2016-17 year, we’re hoping to gather valuable information about how our students use our facilities, services, and resources.

Student Opinion Survey: The library was pleased to once again rank #1 out of 29 categories on the SUNY Student Opinion Survey for GCC for 2016. This year, the “Library Facilities” question was removed from the survey, but students ranked “Study Areas Throughout the College” as #3, and the library is a key campus study area.

Part-time circulation clerk Jess Scheuerman has been accepted for the MLIS program at UB, starting this Fall.

Librarians Cindy Hagelberger and Michele Asmus are hard at work organizing the last few events for this year's A Tale for Three Counties project. S.M. Hulse, author of this year's book, Black River, will be visiting GCC on Thursday, March 10.

Cindy H. is also managing the library's 15th Annual Student Poetry Contest.

The library is supporting the college's first-ever Scholar's Symposium, which will take place on Tuesday, March 29. We've been hosting workshops to help students prepare for the research day, we created a Scholars Symposium LibGuide, and we'll be displaying artwork in conjunction with the event.

We're starting to experiment with proactive chat options on our website, and would be curious to hear how this has been received at other campuses. We use Libraryh3lp for our chat client.

June 3, 2015 Council Meeting @ Purchase (Annual) / Re: Campus Updates
« on: June 01, 2015, 02:28:40 PM »
None of us will be able to make it to Purchase this year but we hope to represent at Binghamton next year.

After compiling all of our stats for the spring, we were pleased to see that weekend head counts and gate counts were up 25% from Spring of 2014. Our two new additional dorm buildings may have something to do with the usage increase, but whatever the reason, we're glad to be busy.

Part-time reference librarian and cataloger Michele Asmus was recently recognized for 10 years of service at GCC.

Librarians Nicki Lerczak and Cindy Francis submitted a grant proposal to bring therapy dogs to the library for study week, and are waiting to hear if the proposal was approved.

Librarians Cindy Hagelberger, Nicki Lerczak, Sarah Karas, Rich Bartl, Michele Asmus, and technical assistant Stephanie Smith put together a presentation on customer service, complete with locally-produced videos depicting challenging patrons, for GCC's annual Mini Summit training days in May 2015.

Here are GCC's updates:

We've hired a new part-time reference librarian, Michelle Salvia, to replace Dan Lewandowski.

We're in the process of hiring a new part-time Technical Assistant to support Reference & Instruction.

We'll be hosting our first-ever GCC Authors reception on Thursday, January 22, coordinated by librarian Cindy Hagelberger.  Ten faculty authors will be celebrated, and their library-created READ posters will be displayed on our shelving end-caps until we collect a new batch of authors.

Librarian Cindy Francis organized our annual "weed and feed" with the GCC nursing faculty on 1/8.  The annual event brings the nursing faculty to the library to assess our print collection and determine which subject areas need to be weeded, enhanced, and updated.  The collection assessment and new technology overview is traditionally followed by lunch, alternately hosted by the library and by the nursing faculty.

Through application to the NY State Council on the Arts, the library received 50 books and journals by contemporary poets and writers at no cost as a recipient of The Al Poulin, Jr. Independent Publishers Development Project. The “Poulin Project” supports independent publishers by introducing their books to new audiences and new potential markets, and allows us to enrich our literature collection and provide materials for the Literary Club and the library’s annual Student Poetry Contest.

After a successful pilot in the Spring, the library is now officially hosting a writing tutor on three nights a week and on Sundays.  Student response has been positive, especially since these times/days fall outside of regular campus tutoring office hours.

GCC librarians reached out to colleagues at our 6 campus centers this summer to update them on various library happenings. From the new Find It! box on the homepage to the virtual bookshelf, library services are available to the entire GCC community not just the folks in Batavia.

The College's Copyright Committee (Chair Nina Warren, Anne Feary, Judie Littlejohn, Carla Guiste, Lauren Paisley, Cindy Francis and Michelle Eichelberger) has created a new resource to help users learn more about copyright.  The committee presented this resource on August 25, at their session "Copyright and Cupcakes, Plagiarism and Pie," at GCC's annual Fall Professional Activity Days.  Thanks to SUNY Purchase for letting us use their copyright model as a template/model.

Instructional Services Librarian Nicki Lerczak, working with a faculty committee, has created a Plagiarism module which consists of a series of five instructional videos and four quizzes.  Students who are caught committing acts of plagiarism will be mandatorily enrolled in a specially created Blackboard course that contains the module and they must successfully pass all of the quizzes.  The module is also available for faculty to place inside their course-space as a learning tool.

Part-time Reference Librarian Justin Cronise has been accepted into the 2014 Library Instruction Leadership Academy (LILAC).  LILAC is now in its third iteration and has gone statewide and virtual.

Library director Nina Warren received the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service.  During Nina’s 22 years at GCC she has consistently and successfully taken on additional responsibilities that have earned her accolades including a Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 1996 as well as the GCC President’s Distinguished Service Award. In 2007, she was selected for the newly revised position of director of Library Services.

Michelle Eichelberger presented the poster “EDS Widgets: Identifying and Meeting Patron Information Needs” at the annual SUNY Librarians Association meeting in Albany.  She also co-presented the poster “Digital Natives Tech Skills: Correlating Student Confidence and Outcomes” at the American Library Association annual meeting in Las Vegas.
