Our new Info Lit librarian has decided that she can't take the winters here and is moving to Florida as I type this update. We plan to hire someone on a Visiting basis for the coming school year so we have time to do a proper search for a tenure-track hire. The Visiting position should be a great opportunity for a recent grad to build his/her resume.

This fall marks the 40th anniversary of the Library's current building. We are putting together a 40th Anniversary edition of the Library Cookbook to mark the occasion. One of our Graphic Arts students designed the cover and interior layouts (it's sharp, like a brand-new santoku knife). We plan for the cookbook to go on sale in late September just in time for Homecoming.

In non-library news, SUNY Cobleskill is back to having a full-time President, albeit an Acting President. Deb Thatcher has moved up from Provost/VPAA to be Acting President for a 2-year term. A full search will be conducted for a start date in 2015.

Summer 2013 will be busy for us here at NCCC. We are preparing for several student-related services to move to the library and be located on our 2nd (Main) floor as of September 1st. The public part of the library currently occupies the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors.  Collections on the 2nd (Main) floor to be relocated to the 3rd and 4th floors include Reference books, Periodicals, Media, Children's Literature, ILL, and Reserves in addition to offices and media viewing stations. As you can imagine, we are busily weeding all collections to make space for the transition over the summer. It is a huge project that we are tackling one day at a time.

Our Evening Circulation Clerk, Michelle Owens, recenly left us to pursue an M.L.S. degree at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.  We wish Micha the best in all of her future endeavors!

SUNY Old Westbury update (adding this for Antonia Digregorio):

What’s happening at SUNY Old Westbury.
 As most of you know – we are in the process of a renovation. The first half of the construction should be complete for the Spring 2014 semester.   
Librarian Joanne Spadaro created an online embedded course for a Sociology Senior Seminar with Professor Diana Papademas from Sociology department. This course was taught in  Fall 2012 and Spring 2013.  The fall 2013 was a hybrid course that only met once a week, and the spring 2013 was a traditional course.
Business librarian, Curt Friehs has published a book chapter  "Surviving Layoffs" from Managing in the Middle.  It was published by ALA Editions and there is a write-up in American Libraries.  Here are some links:
Curt Friehs (Senior Assistant Librarian) and Margaret King (Outreach & Internship Coordinator, Office of Career Planning and Development) gave a presentation on "Using the Internet & Library for Your Career Planning & Job Search" at Workforce Partnership in Massapequa, NY. The presentation focused on strategies to improve career success for an audience actively seeking employment.

Our latest addition to the Old Westbury College library reference staff is Jason Kaloudis. Jason is Access Services and manages the Circulation department. He earned his MLS from the Palmer School of Library Science at LIU in 2007, and comes to us with a background in both academic and public libraries.

Hi from SUNY Delhi!

Many of us have been busy with conferences this Spring. Our library director, Pam Peters, attended ACRL, I attended LOEX and ACRL-NEC, library staff are attending a conference next week, and Amanda Mitchell will be attending and presenting at SUNYLA. Check out her session on gamification in the context of library instruction sessions! Here's a link to her session description:

We've been pretty busy with weeding activities and collecting/reviewing assessment data. Our Spring mini-surveys were successful and our responses from an end of the semester Faculty survey have been helpful. We hope to launch a series of focus groups to gather more qualitative data in the Fall.

The Stephen B. Luce Library is pleased to receive a donation of 600+ volumes from the Nautical Research Guild in Cuba, NY, in subject areas of maritime history, engineering, and naval architecture.

Earlier in May, the T/S Empire State VI left the Bronx for the 2013 Summer Sea Term. Our colleague Elizabeth Berilla is onboard serving as Ship's Librarian. After port calls in New Orleans, Louisiana and St. John's, Newfoundland, she is now heading to Dublin, Ireland. There, Elizabeth will be relieved by Oleg Kushelev, who will continue on to Trieste, Italy and Valetta, Malta before heading back to the Bronx in early August.

College Archivist Matt Francis has resigned to take a position as Archivist for Collection Management at Penn State University.  His last day is June 28th.   A search for his replacement is underway.

Dr. Dennis L. Hefner is now Interim President of SUNY Potsdam as of June 1st.  Dr. Hefner served as president of SUNY Fredonia between 1996 and 2012.  

Student Health Services bought therapy dogs to Crumb Library as part of our StressBusters during Finals Week.  Games, toys, candy and other activities were also available as some of our more traditional StressBusters.  The dogs were a huge hit!

As part of the Lougheed Festival of the Arts in April, Crumb Library hosted a graffiti project to transform blank bookshelves into study room dividers:

Jackhammers in the Library have quieted down as progress on the new loading dock construction project progresses.  

Printing Chocolate Bars: Exploring the Library of the Future was the topic of the panel presented by Librarians Nancy Alzo, Elizabeth Andrews, Carol Franck, Marianne Hebert, Abby Smith, and Jenica Rogers at the 2013 SUNY Potsdam Academic Festival.

GCC recently integrated its ILLiad authentication process into Ezproxy, creating one less username and password for students, faculty and staff to remember.  The college is also committed to switching to a single sign-on this summer, which will decrease the number of student username/password combinations from four (network, Blackboard, email, and ILLiad) to ONE. If you would like information on switching ILLiad authentication to Ezproxy, contact our Systems Librarian Michelle Eichelberger.

In May, part-time Reference Librarian Angela Davis accepted a new position as Engineering Librarian at Penn State. We are currently interviewing to find her replacement. Best wishes Angela!

Library is preparing for a national traveling exhibit this fall, “Life and Limb: The Toll of the American Civil War” from The National Library of Medicine. It will be on display in the Library -- September 16-October 26, 2013.

Genesee Community College received a highly competitive State University of New York "High Needs" grant to help the College establish its proposed new Food Processing Technology program. The program is expected to begin in fall 2014. It will prepare students to work in the rapidly-growing food processing businesses located throughout the Genesee-Livingston-Orleans-Wyoming region. The program will be the only one of its kind offered at any of SUNY's 30 community colleges. The library will be preparing a start-up collection for this field.

Hello from MCC -
Our big news is our new director - SUNYLA's very own Mark McBride!!  Mark will be starting June 24 - YEAH!

Other than that we are busy with print serial and electronic subscription review.  The main LVG Library is currently in the midst of some minor renovations in the research desk area.  The Brighton main campus is undergoing some major road construction and re-routing that hopefully will alleviate congestion.

The LVG Library is also welcoming a new department on the ground floor - Integration Services.  The library's Ann Penwarden will be joining this team.  Integration Services is charged with overseeing the college systems and applications, such as identity management, integration with the campus information system, college websites, and learning management (SUNY SLN). The ground floor was being used as a bound periodical storage area; the project of weeding / integration this material into the stacks was completed over the past several months. Lots of changes at MCC.

We have obtained the promise of funds to purchase the newly announced EBSCOHost EDS discovery layer product, and are in the early stages of launching a combined patron-driven acquisition/short-term loan model e-book pilot project using our largest e-book vendor, ebrary.

Apologies for the long update; things have been pretty busy at Onondaga, as we are down one librarian this year.

A new adjunct librarian began work at Coulter Library on February 26. Jessamyn Anderson will be working Wednesday evenings from 4 to 9. She is currently the full-time librarian at a local high school.

Angela Weiler held a workshop for faculty on Open Educational Resources and Open Access on March 27.

A Spring Break Photo Challenge was held in March. Students submitted photos that depicted their spring break adventures. Photos were submitted using Instagram, Twitter, or email, and were then posted on the Coulter Library Flickr page. On April 1, a winner was randomly drawn from the photo collection. The winning prize was a gift certificate to a local food establishment.

The Coulter Library Online Instruction Reservation System is now “live”, thanks to the efforts of Dennis Thoryk, Coulter’s Media Specialist. After testing this spring, the system will be officially rolled out in the fall.

Pauline Shostack and Angela Weiler organized the a "Human Library" event on Wednesday April 3 from 10 to 2. People volunteered to act as “Human Books”, and the 30 book titles included such topics as Body Art, TV Producer, Veteran, Triathlete, Life in Uzbekistan, and Formerly Homeless.  Students checked books out for 20 minutes at a time. The event was very popular and well-attended.

Jeff Harr presented another installment of his "Albums That Shook the World" series: The Ramones on Friday, April 5, with a reprise presentation on Friday, April 12.

Coulter Library began shipping discarded books to “Better World Books” beginning in April.

Pauline Shostack and Dennis Thoryk are looking into the possibility of adding a streaming media server to the library for its rapidly-expanding digital video collection. They will be researching specifications and vendors in the coming months.

Vianne Marcy has officially assumed the role of Acquisitions and Periodicals Clerk, and is easing gradually into her new responsibilities. Cathy Bauer has accepted the Library Clerk II (Reserves) position, and Cheri Henderson will be taking over interlibrary loan responsibilities. A search for another Library Clerk I has begun.

Coulter Library again offered extended hours (until 11 pm) during the last week of classes and finals week.

Rob O’Boyle served as the President of the faculty union (OCCFTA) for the 2012 - 2013 academic year. He also facilitated a trial of the Ebsco Discovery service, which ran until the end of the semester.

Coulter Library Secretary Sandra Wiley was awarded a Chancellor's Award for Classified Service.

Pauline Shostack will be submitting a proposal for a new course titled “Research Skills through Game Design”, to be taught with the help of a graduate student from Syracuse University. Topics will include information resources (online and print), search techniques, primary resources, critical evaluation, copyright and intellectual property issues, and the use and value of libraries and information centers. The course will use motivational game design/play elements for evaluation purposes. Students will learn about these topics through designing, developing, and testing their original games.

The P-Counter printing system was implemented in the fall of 2012, and monitors student printing and payment in the library. Instead of the hoped-for reduction in paper use, it actually resulted in a 300% increase in paper use during the 2012 – 2013 academic year.

*In Mid May SUNY ESF migrated from the Voyager system to ALEPH. This summer everyone at Moon Library is very busy learning the new system.

*We also have been busy with searches – one for a new Assistant Librarian to handle ILL, teaching, collection development and reference and another open position we have is for our circulation manager. Both people in those positions retired during the Spring semester.

Tompkins Cortland Community College

We've concluded our first FY of treating ILL requests for books published in the past 5 years as purchase on demand.  It'll be a little while before we'll be able to see the re-use of these titles and compare it with the loan history of selector-initiated purchases.  But we will continue this POD model in the upcoming FY, certainly.  It was interesting to look at who was requesting what sorts of things.  We compared faculty/staff requests for leisure materials to student requests for same.  And we looked at categories of borrowers asking for scholarly materials.  It was all fairly evenly divided, so students requested as much scholarly material as faculty/staff requested leisure reading.

Summer plans include digitizing audio and video recordings kept in the Archives and, for the third summer, supporting the classroom and research work of visiting faculty members from a few universities in South America who live on campus for a Summer Intensive English Institute.

We learned today that SUNYIT has a new acting President, Dr. Robert E. Geer, effective August 1, 2013.  He comes to SUNYIT from the UAlbany College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.  Our President, Wolf Yeigh, has accepted a position as Chancellor at the University of Washington, Bothell campus.  We are anticipating the start of construction on our new nanoscience building in late June.

Barbara Grimes will begin phased retirement in mid-June.  In August, she will return to work three days per week to resume her current duties.

Hello from SUNY Oneonta. We currently have a new intern who is working with Heather Beach to digitize our special collections. Mary Lynn Bensen has an article that has just been accepted for publication. Congratulations, Mary Lynn!
