Emily Barber is our new Library Services Assistant. She is currently earning her Master of Library and Information Science from Syracuse University. She graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics and History.

Librarian Nora Burrows has increased the library's Twitter presence by actively posting and retweeting information about the library, college, local communities and events, happenings in higher education, and more.  The library's Twitter community grew from 17 followers in mid-October to 43 followers by mid-November. We now follow more than 160 people and organizations. To follow us on Twitter: @SUNYAdkLibrary. The library also continues to use Twitter to answer reference questions through LibAnswers.

This month, the library received a new custom-made reference desk made by Technolink, distributed through DEMCO. Nora tweeted a photo here: https://twitter.com/SUNYAdkLibrary?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw. The desk was ordered as part of the library renovation this summer. The higher section of the desk can be lowered with a button to accommodate library users.

Construction has started for an NSTEM  and Workforce Readiness Center (WORC) additions to the science building at the north end of campus. The construction started with a ground-breaking ceremony in October. Occupancy of the NSTEM addition is expected in Sept. 2017. The science buildilng will also be renovated between September 2017 and finished by June 2018. The WORC will be ready for occupancy for the spring 2018 term.

As part of the new division of Academic and Instructional Services, Empire State College Library had been part of a search for an Assistant Dean, who would be in charge of both the library and the instructional designers. That search failed and will not be re-run until the position description and responsibilities have been retooled. In the mean time, the librarians report directly to Dr. Lisa D'Adamo Weinstein, the Dean of Academic and Instructional Services.

Heather Shalhoub and Sara Hull have been named as members of the Academic and Instructional Services Leader Team.

At the Academic and Instructional Services two-day retreat in October, the librarians invited Mark McBride to talk to us about SUNY OER Services, and we started the discussions and arrangements for how the library, instructional designers, academic support directors, accessibility services, and faculty training personnel can foster and support the adoption of OER.

Sarah Morehouse has been on the road a lot, presenting about the library at the college's Rochester location, and about Open Educational Resources at the college's Fall Academic Conference and Digital Day event. All of the librarians represented the college at the Fall Academic Conference, and Heather Shalhoub took part in the Student Academic Conference.

Dana Longley is piloting a Personal Librarian program with our Nursing Program, in which she will encourage both faculty and students to contact her directly for specialized help. She's created a student-facing page - http://subjectguides.esc.edu/nursing/personallibrarian - to guide students.

Sarah Morehouse is in the process of taking over the library budget, surveys and other paperwork. It is like Franz Kafka, with a little bit of Martha Stewart. Her desk frightens her now.

Morrisville library is proud to announce the hiring of John Coger as our new full time evening circulation supervisor. John was previously with us part-time and is even a Morrisville alum. He will be a great asset as we move our circulation services forward and make further changes on how and what circulation has to offer our students.

Circulation has also picked up some new unique materials for lending. Our new 3D anatomical structures, which include a set of lungs, a heart, and kidney’s/liver will be available for student check out soon. They will be used in the library only, and we look forward to see what kind of use they will get. If popular we plan on purchasing additional anatomical structures in the future.

Thanks largely in part to the efforts of OLIS and our local IT department working with the library, patrons now have the ability to renew their materials and place holds on materials online through the OPAC system!  This has been a slow project to become realized, but the library is excited to make the process of renewing materials or requesting materials that much more automated.

In addition to patron empowerment through OPAC we have also implemented a new study room reservation system. The library has been reviewing several different options to give our students more power over reserving study spaces. In the end we decided on LibCal, a Springshare product. LibCal allows us to set up study rooms and reservation limitations that mirror our needs. It allows students to book their own study rooms in advance and gives them notifications via email to confirm times. It, as many Springshare products do, gives us an adequate amount of analytics that will aid us in future decisions on staffing, hours, and library space.

The library gallery wall hosted several exhibitions over the course of the fall semester. In October we had our annual Lee Brown Coy display with an assortment of macabre oil paintings and black & white illustrations. A perfect collection for the season.

The second exhibit was in November and displayed the works of United States veterans. Largely made up of oil and watercolor paintings, this display coincided with a gallery reception on Veterans Day where several of the artists were able to discuss with visitors their inspirations behind each piece and their experience serving in our military.

As part of our STS (Science, Technology, and Society) Symposium on campus this year, the library played a large role in the formation of a video game book club. Developed by librarian Angela Rhodes, this “book club” played through the game Transistor over the course of four weeks with regular meetings each Tuesday in the library. As with any regular book club the themes, story, and characters were discussed in detail. Participants that attended each meeting were given a raffle ticket to be entered into a drawing for Transistor merchandise that was generously donated to us by the game developer SuperGiant. This event was well received, and it is likely that the library will be hosting additional video game book clubs in the future.

This fall Morrisville completed the newest version of the Rethinking Resource Sharing STAR Checklist. After review by the Rethinking Resource Sharing Policies Committee we were qualified as a Rethinking Resource Sharing STAR, earning the top spot of 4 STARS. It goes without saying that we could not have achieved this without our amazing library interlibrary loan specialist Marilyn Cook.

Progress is continuing on the campus's new Student Success Center and the Richard C. Call Arena, with completion scheduled for Summer 2017.

Library staff members Laura Peck, Sarah Karas, and Cindy Hagelberger led a trivia night event at the college's new campus housing gathering spot, The Root: http://www.genesee.edu/library/library-news/trivia-night-at-the-root/

The library has hosted several exhibits over the past two months, coordinated by librarians Cindy Francis and Cindy Hagelberger: Election Exhibit, Celebration of Native American Heritage, 2d Design Exhibit "Tableaux", and a Domestic Violence Awareness Month Exhibit. We've also run two successful themed roving weeks: Health Literacy and Harry Potter's Fantastic Beasts. For each week, a volunteer librarian designs and creates a themed bookcart and prepares material for a week-long trivia contest. Photos are on our blog.

Nicki Lerczak has set up a series of Plagiarism and Citation Help drop-in sessions in order to provide an extra option for help for students at the end of the semester.

Michelle Eichelberger will be serving on the SUNY Library Services Platform Evaluation Team.

Stony Brook University Libraries’ second annual Open Access Symposium was held on Tuesday, 25 October 2016.  The event featured keynote speakers Justin Peters, Slate correspondent and author of Aaron Swartz and the Rise of Free Culture and Jennie Rose Halperin, Communications Manager at Creative Commons.  The day-long symposium included panels such as “At the Intersection of Open Education and EdTech” and “Open Sciences and Data Visualization” and a digital humanities panel.

Stony Brook University Libraries honored Native American Heritage Month with a series of events highlighting Native American history and culture. The program included a musical performance, dance, lecture symposium and a dream catcher social event.

 A Digital Humanities Open Mic Event was held on October 31st. Faculty and students came together to discuss the digital humanities and to explore new possibilities for research.  Emphasizing practices and tools, scholars presented projects which used technology to reveal new insights within the traditional humanistic media of texts, images, and maps.


In its final presentation of the fall 2016 semester, University Libraries Presents: Writers Series hosted author Carl Safina to present on his book, “Beyond Words: How Elephants, Wolves, and Killer Whales Think and Feel.” He shared how he spent time working with researchers who have dedicated decades to studying particular families of wild elephants, wolves, and killer whales. He told the amazing strategies and judgment calls wild creatures have made to ensure their families’ survival in times of crisis.

The University Libraries partnered with Counseling and Psychological Services to host another pet therapy event on November 9. The PALS (Pet Away Life Stress) program offers an opportunity for stress reduction for our student community, an opportunity to take a moment out of their hectic schedules to pet a dog and get some unconditional love. The were two tables set up with staff from the counseling center and librarians who were on hand to let the students know we are here to make your college experience less stressful and more enjoyable.  We will be hosting our final PALS event of the semester on Wednesday, December 7th at 1:00PM.

Jay Datema joined the Stony Brook University Libraries as the Head of the Health Sciences Library.  He comes to the University Libraries with extensive experience.  At Cambridge University Press, Jay served as a member of the senior management team for the New York Office. He collaborated with Editorial, Platform Technology, Marketing and Digital Operations teams to drive innovative new projects. In addition, he directed an iPad pilot project to push content to student, teacher and third screens. Past professional experience includes: Director of Library Services at the Metropolitan College of New York where he managed a $1.5 million collection and staff library budget; Associate Director at the Bern Dibner Library at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, where he managed public and access services, an information literacy program; Medical Librarian in the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York where he served on the committee for Innovative library catalog upgrade for Four Corners Consortium, including Weill Cornell Medical School, Rockefeller University and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Libraries. He recommended document delivery and collection development solutions to the library committee and prototyped library intranet with database driven journals page and current awareness RSS feeds; Application Developer for the New York Public Library; Technology Editor for the Library Journal; and Systems Librarian and Digital Project Developer for Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

The Stony Brook University Libraries welcomed Chris Kretz as the Head of the Southampton Library. For the past fourteen years, Chris has been a member of the library faculty at Dowling College, most recently as Digital Resources/Reference Librarian.  He has served as Dowling College Library’s Department Chair, and has held a leadership role in strategic planning at the Library. Chris has implemented effective and creative programming at Dowling College, including an academic library podcast and a coffee house series designed to position the library as a cultural and social space.  Additionally, he is very active in local history.  He has created a podcast for the Long Island History Project, participated in oral history projects and created social media content for the Oakdale Historical Society.

Most of our big news is in the latest SUNYLA newsletter. Aside from that...

Peter Barvoets did a lightning presentation at the Scholarly Communications Unconference at NYLA about how we got almost 100 students to publish their presentations in our Digital Repository. 

October's Library Chili Cook-Off was a hit! There were 13 entries and lots of people milling around eating. The big winners:

Maritime

The Academic Success Center had its Grand Opening this past Monday (November 14th). Students and Faculty alike are very pleased with the space that includes an Active Learning Classroom, Study Lounge, and three group study rooms. All of the rooms can be reserved by members of the Maritime Community though the Library's website.

As soon as final exams end Facilities will be returning to work on renovating our Archives. The internal walls were demolished over the summer, and they'll be back to do all the necessary work to make the space nice before the installation of compact shelving.

We're also about to undertake several more large weeding and inventory projects. Once those projects are done we hope to have additional space in the library for students to work and relax.
