United University Professions (UUP) is the union representing more than 34,000 academic and professional faculty on 29 State University of New York campuses, plus System Administration, Empire State College, and the New York State Theatre Institute. UUP is affiliated with the New York State United Teachers and the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO.

Political Attacks on State Employees
•   UUP has been actively fighting proposed employee furlough plans; this has resulted in a number of legal victories http://www.uupinfo.org/communications/release10/100602.html
•   UUP leadership has indicated that the governor has resisted attempts at negotiation (regarding possible lag pay, furloughs, etc.)  Instead, ultimatums have been presented, in a take-it-or-leave-it approach.
•   Any change in our contract would be voted on by the full UUP membership.  The governor has resisted this approach as well.

Nylink
•   A retrenchment of the entire Nylink operation became known on May 17, 2010;
•   This is one of, if not the largest retrenchment in SUNY history (12 UUP employees);
•   If the decision is fully implemented, Nylink will cease operations June 1, 2011;
•   Friends, colleagues, fellow librarians in Nylink need our support and assistance.

SUNY Budget
•   Your help is needed!  There is a sense that some SUNY budget restorations are possible.  Legislators need to hear from you!  Please visit http://www.uupinfo.org/take_action.html and urge colleagues, friends, families to do the same in support of SUNY and UUP legislative agenda;
•   Please visit http://savesuny.org/ and urge colleagues, friends, families to do the same in support of SUNY and UUP legislative agenda;

Hello,

Including the document of comments via SCLD (posted by Carey) and referenced by April.

John

86
Hello.

I agree with Joe Petrick (Alfred) when he posts to SUNYLA-l that there are other fish beyond the SUNY [marketing/branding] plan.  He mentions the SUNY budget and the governor's proposed "flex" legislation for SUNY and CUNY.

I would like to highlight that the chancellor's letter to NYS political leaders (posted by Joe) still does not call for restorations of SUNY (state operated campus) budget cuts.  The legislators have questioned for years why it is that the SUNY Board of Trustees and SUNY leadership do not (in general) ask for budget increases nor (oftentimes) for budget restorations.  Add to this the slow, some would argue unclear (untransparent) way that SUNY has dealt with the issue of financial reserves (in contrast to how CUNY handled the same situation) ...and you see reasons why proposals from all three NYS bodies are not restoring SUNY budget cuts.

Instead, this ill-conceived PHEEIA.  Where "no cost" means it will be up to the tuition payers to fund the university ....allows NYS to get further off the hook in terms of financing public higher ed ...imo threatens much of the SUNY system.

to take action - Keep the State in the State University of New York!

General Discussion / Re: Strategic Plan
« on: April 01, 2010, 10:03:25 AM »
Hello.

First, just a point of clarification -
LR> The Library Access Working Group final report that was used to generate portions of the strategic plan.

That document is from the "infrastructure" portion of all this; it was produced really after much of the main strategic planning went on.  Carey Hatch (co-chair) has indicated that he is not sure what, if any of it will find its way into subsequent SUNY-wide plans.  From what I've heard, it is not accurate to say it "was used to generate portions of the strategic plan".

I think you will also agree that the Library Access Working Group document is also "outward looking" (for better or worse ...I have my opinion about that).

But, if there are portions of that library-focused document that SUNYLA endorses ...that would be good input to send to the strategic planning group.

To Logan's question -
LR> ...that explains the way we fit into aspects.

I second Judy's posting to SUNYLA-l as one way to link up library issues with strategic plan -

"I think where SUNY's libraries obliquely fit into the Strategic Plan, for better or for worse, is in the oft-repeated language in the Plan about "interconnections....Imagine the competitive
advantage for New York State if SUNY institutions joined forces as never before, pooling knowledge, pushing and building on each other's ideas, and collaborating in ways that connect and deploy our distinctive capabilities to the fullest extent possible."    [Judith Adams-Volpe - Buffalo]

The chancellor is on record indicating that SUNY libraries have been in the forefront of such SUNY-wide efforts.  That seems like a point to emphasize with the strategic planning group.

John
