•   Social media update: up to 217 FB followers; 249 on Twitter. If you’re not one of them, why not??

September 18, 2017 Council Meeting @ Delhi / Campus Update - Cobleskill
« on: September 15, 2017, 12:24:56 PM »
Van Wagenen Library hosted a luncheon on Sept. 14th for Mark McBride (OLIS) to come to Cobleskill and talk to faculty and administrators about OERs.

The new entrance on the lower level of the Library is finally open and ready for use! This change provides more direct access to CASE (tutoring, etc.) and EOP, as well as our lovely Archives and Special Collections room.

The Library’s Annual Chili Cook-Off happens October 4th. Tasters will vote for their favorites in three categories: Hottest, Best Tasting, and Most Unique.

The Library’s big Fall Book Sale begins Friday, October 13th and runs through Tuesday, November 21st. Stop by and shop if you’re in the neighborhood.

Dawn Foland, part-time Circulation Supervisor and Coby grad, started Rutgers University’s online Master of Information program over the summer.

Congratulations to Don LaPlant on his recent promotion to Associate Librarian! This summer Don attended two major library conferences: the ALA annual conference and the LOEX Conference focused on library instruction and information literacy pedagogy.

The biggest news here at the library is that all the old, dying public area pc's have been replaced with brand-new machines. Brand-new, not just less-old-hand-me-downs! (we're pretty easy to please)

In people news...
Gina Brady, Cindy Maguire, & Cathy Wise are all attending the NYSLAA conference in Syracuse as I type this (June 7-9).

April Davies and Katherine Brent will both be in Stony Brook for the SUNYLA conference. And Beth Orgeron will be there earlier in the week for the SLC (aka SCLD) conference.

Don LaPlant is going to Chicago for ALA later this month.

Activities:
•   The May newsletter was posted with time to spare. This was the first issue done with InDesign so there were some quirks to iron out but otherwise the change has worked out fine.
•   Newsletter editor Sherry Larson-Rhodes is working on a style guide.
•   Jim Coan and Nancy Abashian have left the committee. Jim retired and Nancy has other commitments.

Upcoming:
•   We’re planning to do the special ‘post-conference’ edition again since it was such a hit last year (http://www.sunyla.org/sunyla_docs/newsletters/2016june-se.pdf)
•   I might recruit a couple of new members, or not. I haven’t decided yet.

January 27, 2017 Council Meeting @ FIT / Campus update - Cobleskill
« on: January 25, 2017, 12:03:11 PM »
Since last we spoke...

Van Wagenen Library hosted our 3rd trivia night, this one for faculty and staff only since alcohol was being served. My team was victorious but, being a library employee and a good person, I gave my share of the prizes to the non-library faculty on the team. :)

We’re doing minor renovations to the lower level to make an additional entrance. More on that when it’s done.

Instructional Design Librarian Don LaPlant has developed a series of 3 information literacy tutorials using LibWizard and Guide On The Side for our FFCS classes. The tutorials reach all first year students.

Clever weeding and shifting on the top floor has allowed us to create a new space for quiet, independent study.

SUNY Cobleskill has ‘new’ provost. Sue Zimmerman had been the interim and now she’s got the job for real.

Activities:
•   Submissions for the February newsletter are trickling in.  DUE DATE:  Jan. 27
•   We finally hit 200 followers on Facebook a few months ago. The total is now 205. The most popular FB post from the first half of the year was in August when Brandon West (Geneseo) was ACRL member of the week—434 people reached.
•   Twitter is at 234 followers, which is pretty good considering the content is 99.9% FB posts that automatically feed over.

Most of our big news is in the latest SUNYLA newsletter. Aside from that...

Peter Barvoets did a lightning presentation at the Scholarly Communications Unconference at NYLA about how we got almost 100 students to publish their presentations in our Digital Repository.

October's Library Chili Cook-Off was a hit! There were 13 entries and lots of people milling around eating. The big winners:
Best Tasting - Jodi Northrup - Taco Tuesday Chili
Most Unique - Donna Pesta - White Lightning
Hottest - Josh Foland - Pizzazz

September 23, 2016 Council meeting at Geneseo / Campus Update-Cobleskill
« on: September 22, 2016, 05:09:05 PM »
Things are a super hectic at Cobleskill right now. It's our centennial AND homecoming starts tomorrow. The crew from StoryCorps arrived today and are all set up in one of our study rooms to gather stories from alums, former employees (hint, hint Fishner), and anyone else with a Coby tale to tell. More info on our website: http://www.cobleskill.edu/library

Also, we had a new person start at the library today (in my department) so I've been trying to get started training her and everything in between meetings (I'm on the Middle States committee for our periodic review) and prepping the book sale which starts tomorrow.

In other news... the tutorials created by our Instruction librarian, Don LaPlant, are getting rave reviews. They are on our libguides site if you want to see.  We've received a grant from the New York Council for the Humanities to host a discussion group series celebrating the centennial of the Pulitzer Prize. Prof. Erik Hage has agreed to facilitate each discussion. A large portion of the Iroquois Indian Museum's research collection has moved into our newly renovated Archives & Special Collections space. We now house their monograph and pamphlet collection, and a portion of their journal collection will move over in the future.

See our fall newsletter for more goings on: https://dspace.sunyconnect.suny.edu/bitstream/handle/1951/68203/fall2016.pdf

•   I am currently recruiting someone to be the newsletter editor as Jennifer Smathers has stepped down from that job.

Coming up:
•   The next issue of the newsletter will come out in February.
•   Jennifer D. is looking into setting up a Hootsuite account to help manage the FB and Twitter feeds.

Instructional Design Librarian Don LaPlant is co-presenting a preconference session about the Guide on the Side pilot project.

Circulation Manager Brendan Aucoin graduated from UAlbany’s MSIS program in May. Congrats Brendan!

Joshua Rimmer is our new Night Circulation Supervisor. A graduate of Drexel’s MSIS program, he’s also helping out with reference and various tech services projects. Recent Coby grad Dawn Ladanye is also working for us as a Night Circ Supervisor, part-time. Dawn is currently trying to choose which library school to attend.

April’s SUNY Undergrad Research Conference went well. Many of the presentations are available in our Digital Repository: www.cobleskill.edu/library/digital-repository.asp.

As part of the College’s centennial celebration, the library is planning a StoryCorps oral history project for Homecoming this fall.

Publications Committee Report
June 8, 2016

Activities:
•   The May newsletter got posted to the website on May 26. The next issue will be in October, with the submission date in mid-September.
•   Email discussions re: other potential activities for the committee haven’t been as productive as I’d hoped—my fault as much as it is anyone else’s. I’ll try again over summer.

Ideas for coming year:
•   Get 1 or 2 committee members to be additional admins on the SUNYLA fb page—we need more postings and it shouldn’t all come from me, variety is good. More admins will also provide backup in case I win the lottery and move to Nova Scotia.
•   Get a committee member to be the admin on the SUNYLA twitter account—our tweets are all generated by our fb posts at present, this is not optimal and as twitter is not my thing…
•   October newsletter should include an article about being a delegate—something like ‘so you’re a delegate, now what?’ or ‘why it’s been great being a delegate’
•   and ads for the grants program and for getting involved in the upcoming online mid-winter conference (assuming we’re still going to do it)
