January 29, 2016 Council Meeting @ FIT / TC3: Campus Updates

Classes start today!

We're still tinkering with our space after one full semester of integrated tutoring services.   

We had a very noisy fall semester and are trying to start our semester off on a better (i.e., slippered) foot. 

In preparation for Margaret Anderson's retirement this summer we're redistributing some responsibilities as well as conducting a search for a full-time librarian. 

Participation in our photo-exploration game for our developmental writing classes is reaching 100%, and the team Quest we play with academic writing courses at the beginning of each semester is still going strong.  It promises to be a whirlwind first couple of weeks!

June 3, 2015 Council Meeting @ Purchase (Annual) / Campus Updates _ TC3

Only one of us is heading off to Purchase for the conference.  The rest of us are staying here to continue work on our recent inventory, helping a cohort of summer students from the Dominican Republic, and preparing for a group of faculty who will be here for an intensive English language institute.  Plus tackling all those other summer project plans.

Tutoring services have been housed in different parts of the Baker Commons.  This summer, the math, science, business and accounting tutoring is moving upstairs (where the library is) to be co-located with writing tutoring.  So we're also rearranging our space and changing signs, web pages, etc..  It'll be really good - eventually.

We were in the third group for EDS and are delaying our public launch until January.  We need to figure out a few more things, revise a few research guides and adjust our instruction and training practices more thoroughly than our little window allowed.  Classes started early for us this fall!

The Library began offering video recording services about a year ago - sending someone to class with a video camera to capture student presentations or having students in speech class, for example, come individually to be recorded, and then posting the videos to Angel/BB.  Use for that service is picking up.  Additionally, the Library started offering to capture lectures and guest lecturers or otherwise help gather and post instructor-generated content for online and hybrid classes. 

The writing center is housed within the library, and we have encouraged writing adjuncts to use our space (we have a couple of rooms adjacent to where writing tutoring happens) for their office hours.  For the adjuncts, it's a welcome alternative to the "bull pen" that is otherwise available to them.  For us, we are building relationships and reinforcing connections between the writing and the research processes.

And in the next SUNYLA Newsletter you'll see a few other tidbits from TC3.  I'm trying not to repeat myself!

June 11, 2014 Council Meeting @SUNY Albany / Campus Updates: Tompkins Cortland Community College

Some campus renovations have begun, only indirectly effecting the Library/Baker Commons.  It's possible that student and classroom technology support services will move their offices, hardware storage and service window out of our area.  If so, we'll be working on adjusting our service model as well as gaining instruction space.

The campus will be implementing PaperCut this summer.  We're looking forward to improvements as well as greater stability.

We are in the third group of EDS, taking deep, calming breaths...

We will be hosting faculty and administrators, primarily from Colombia but also a group from Mali, in the College's Summer Intensive English Institute.  Participants are grouped according to initial English-language ability.  The Library works especially closely with people in the top proficiency who tend to be working on fairly substantial research projects.  The participants will be taking field trips to more specialized libraries in the area, too.

We're in beta for LibGuides 2.0.

The College's two programs in Culinary Arts and Sustainable Agriculture have been approved, new faculty have been hired and both planting and construction are under way from Farm to Bistro.  The restaurant, as well as classroom and meeting space, will be in downtown Ithaca.  The farm is adjacent to campus. It's possible that library materials that support the culinary arts and wine marketing classes will move to Ithaca, too, since that's where the classes are intended to be taught.  Many decisions to be made.

March 21, 2014 Council Meeting @SUNY Albany / TC3

Our big project right now is organizing a Human Library event for April 10.  See our site at http://tc3.libguides.com/humanlibrary.  We have benefitted from the guidance of Pauline and Angela at OCC.

Once all the access and authentication questions have been resolved, we will be launching a collection of Axis360 ebooks and audiobooks.

We're working on a marketing campaign intended to teach students about what librarians do/are good for/can help them with.  We're gathering testimonials and photographs and preparing posters and slideshows (for in-house display and on the Web) for launch in January.

Currently, we have book displays up in honor of National Picture Book Month (with selections and annotations from the students in the children's lit course) and International Education Week (about world food supply and hunger).

September 20, 2013 Council Meeting @SUNY Onondaga / Tompkins Cortland Community College

We've wrapped up a busy 2.5 weeks of hosting our active learning game, the Quest, that we offer to composition courses for students to learn about a range of library and support services available in the Baker Commons. 

We're participating in the Tompkins County/Cornell University 2013 Community Read.  We've distributed copies of When the Emperor Was Divine, have scheduled a pizza and discussion lunch, and are organizing a trip to Cornell University to view associated art and special collections exhibits.

We continue to treat patron requests for recent publications as "purchase on demand." After the first year, we find we're adding a fairly even mix of academic and leisure reading, for an even mix of faculty/staff and student patrons.

We now have four TVs in the Baker Center (3 in the Library) for displaying slideshows to promote services, feature ebook acquisitions, and supplement book displays.

Tompkins Cortland Community College

We've concluded our first FY of treating ILL requests for books published in the past 5 years as purchase on demand.  It'll be a little while before we'll be able to see the re-use of these titles and compare it with the loan history of selector-initiated purchases.  But we will continue this POD model in the upcoming FY, certainly.  It was interesting to look at who was requesting what sorts of things.  We compared faculty/staff requests for leisure materials to student requests for same.  And we looked at categories of borrowers asking for scholarly materials.  It was all fairly evenly divided, so students requested as much scholarly material as faculty/staff requested leisure reading.

Summer plans include digitizing audio and video recordings kept in the Archives and, for the third summer, supporting the classroom and research work of visiting faculty members from a few universities in South America who live on campus for a Summer Intensive English Institute.

At TC3 we are stepping up our efforts to build our collections "just in time" rather than "just in case."  We are testing out a purchase on demand model - for print books - in which borrowing requests are routed in ILLiad to a queue for purchase instead of borrowing.

Any request for a book published from 2008 to the present is redirected.  If the book is readily available, costs $20 or less we purchase (from bn.com or amazon).  Requests that are for books that are clearly outside the curriculum or are more expensive are routed to the appropriate librarian for review and then are either borrowed or bought.

Tompkins Cortland Community College (Susanna Van Sant, delegate)

We've had another highly successful season of our Quest - an active learning, team-based, warmly competitive orientation to all sorts of library and student support services available in our Baker Center for Learning (of which the Library is a part).  We're exhausted, but it's well worth it.  We'll be investigating offering the Quest during New Student Orientation to broaden our reach and to host the sessions prior to the start of classes each semester.

Eric Jenes has joined our staff as an adjunct librarian and writing tutor.  We continue to explore ways to integrate research/reference services and writing support.

We've increased our "purchase-on-demand" activity to build our print collection of both scholarly and leisure reading materials.  We also fulfill patrons' (primarily leisure reading) requests through immediate download to the Nooks that we circulate.  We're also exploring adjustments to our ILLiad routing rules to expand our POD acquisitions further.

Tompkins Cortland Community College

Bill Drew retired on May 11 and as of May 14 Susanna Van Sant became the full time, temporary Acquisitions and Collection Management Librarian.  A formal search for a permanent hire will be conducted later this summer.

We're in the home stretch of a significant weeding project to review books that had not circulated in 10 or more years.

An inventory of the full collection is under way.

We've added more Nooks and mp3/audio players (Fuzes and iPod touches) to our circulating collections and we expect to be circulating iPads in the fall.

The College web site is undergoing a redesign and the Library's new pages will be ready for the fall semester.
