Here are GCC's updates:

We've hired a new part-time reference librarian, Michelle Salvia, to replace Dan Lewandowski.

We're in the process of hiring a new part-time Technical Assistant to support Reference & Instruction.

We'll be hosting our first-ever GCC Authors reception on Thursday, January 22, coordinated by librarian Cindy Hagelberger.  Ten faculty authors will be celebrated, and their library-created READ posters will be displayed on our shelving end-caps until we collect a new batch of authors.

Librarian Cindy Francis organized our annual "weed and feed" with the GCC nursing faculty on 1/8.  The annual event brings the nursing faculty to the library to assess our print collection and determine which subject areas need to be weeded, enhanced, and updated.  The collection assessment and new technology overview is traditionally followed by lunch, alternately hosted by the library and by the nursing faculty.

Nancy Goldblatt is joining the Library team as an Adjunct Reference Librarian. She is also the School Library Media Specialist at Cobleskill-Richmondville High School. Nancy is a graduate of SUNY New Paltz and received her MSIS from UAlbany.

We finally got our shiny new flatscreen hooked up in the lobby. Digital signage is proving to be both useful and fun.

I'm pleased to report that it was recently announced that Dr. Marion Terenzio will become the next president of SUNY Cobleskill. Dr. Terenzio is currently Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty at Bloomfield College in New Jersey.

Staff Updates: Serials and ILL have combined. Susan Perry is now overseeing that department. Logan Rath has moved full time into Instruction and Reference.

Drake Library is in the process of getting a Makerspace. It's being installed as I'm writing this update! This new space will contain our 3D printers and allow for small group projects.

Also, thanks to a generous (and anonymous) donor the eight stained glass windows in the library are being restored by Valerie O'Hara of Pike Stained Glass. These windows are rare survivors of a much earlier era in our history, the "Normal" era. Established as a private academy in 1835, we became a state Normal school in 1867. From about 1910 to 1930 various graduating classes and other student groups donated stained glass windows to the school. There ended up being sixteen such windows, prominently displayed along the main corridor of the Normal School. In the late 1930s the old building was torn down and replaced by what we now call Hartwell Hall. The story is a little unclear, but eight of the windows at least were boxed up and stored in the basement of Hartwell. They were discovered there in the early 1970s and placed in the library at the urging of history professor Wayne Dedman.

SUNY Potsdam Updates

We are making preparations for new carpet and paint on the first floor of the Crumb Library.  The original plan was to do everything over the course of winter break; However, it has been delayed until the end of the semester because the carpet was not available during break.  This involves determining the importance of having journals that can be browsed or not and weeding of the microform collection.

Abby Smith will be leaving SUNY Potsdam on January 30th.  I will also be leaving the college and my last day will be February 20th.  I will be moving to Colorado and working in a suburb of Denver.

Hello from SUNY Cortland. I do not remember when we last wrote an update. So, I apologize for any repeats. We have had a few retirements and a few new hires. Dave Ritchie and Gretchen Herrmann both retired after many years of service. They were also very active in SUNYLA. They will be missed. We have hired a few new Instructional Services Librarians, a Technical Services Librarian, and a new Information Literacy/Instruction Coordinator. We have seen many changes in our instruction program, with a lot of new exciting developments. All in all, a lot of change here at SUNY Cortland. Of course, that is normal for libraries...lots of change....

The F. Franklin Moon Library at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry is proud to host the National Library of Medicine’s Traveling Exhibition Harry Potter’s World, Renaissance Science, Magic, and Medicine. Detailing primary source materials from the 15th and 16th centuries, the exhibit entails six posters on potions, monsters, herbology, magical creatures, fantastic beasts, and immortality.  Moon Library supplemented the display with interesting books from the collection and display cases with Harry Potter memorabilia.  Working with student groups, such as the Quidditch Club and the Alchemists, we plan to host a Harry Potter Trivia event in the library to promote the exhibit. Follow Moon Library on Facebook (Moon Library) and Twitter (@esfmoon) for 6 weeks of exciting content.  The exhibit is on display from 1/19/15 to 2/28/15. Starting in the Fall of 2014 Moon Library started a new workshop series called the Moon Library Skill Sharpener Series. This workshop series offers weekly workshops taught by Moon Library staff to students and faculty on a number of topics (Citation Management, Open Publishing, Blackboard, etc.) This series was so successful that the workshop series is once again being done during the Spring 2015 semester.

Senior Assistant Librarian in Bibliographic Services, Cheng Cheng attended the ACRL/NY Symposium entitled “The Academic Librarian in the Open Access Future” on December 5.

Members of the Special Collections Committee are busy working on an exhibit as part of the “Lost Oneonta” exhibit at the Greater Oneonta Historical Society.

We are currently accepting applications for a Continuing Resources and Metadata Librarian.

As previously mentioned, the Visual Resources Slide Library is undergoing an extensive update and redesign. This process is now nearly complete, and the newly remodeled workspace is now a laboratory/classroom for digital production, format conversion, digital preservation, experiments in gaming, and student collaborations.

Eva Sclippa, Art Librarian and Coordinator of Instruction, is co-author of a newly published article in the journal Art Documentation, the official journal of ARLIS/NA. “Where Visual and Information Literacies Meet” describes the authors’ efforts to consistently assess their art history information literacy program.

Trevor Riley, our new Engineering and Emerging Technologies Librarian, is excited to be presenting at the SUNYLA Midwinter Online Conference. He will be speaking about Guide on the Side, a tutorial software that allows librarians to create tutorials that patrons can view side by side with the library website.

The library will soon be receiving a large number of new, high quality books on Japanese art, thanks to a grant secured by Art History Professor Meghen Jones and Art Librarian Eva Sclippa. The grant, provided by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies, will greatly expand and refresh our current offerings on Japanese art and architecture.

We don't have too much to report right now, but we've all been very busy getting the Spring semester going.

Our Director search is ongoing, though we hope to have a decision some time in February.

We're in the process of launching a library Facebook page at We're also looking at starting up a library newsletter. Both platforms will be great avenues to better reach our faculty and students and promote all that we're doing in the library.

Nassau Community College:

NCC’s annual Collection Development Day will be held on February 10. This popular event gives faculty members a chance to stop by the Library for lunch and discuss ways to help build our collection.
The Library will also be getting some new digital signage this semester  :)

Uday Karki was appointed a Supervising Programmer Analyst in November 2014.

Dan Kinney, Associate Director for Resource Management, was elected president of the Long Island Resources Council Board of Trustees for 2015.

Bushra Butt, Karen D'Angelo, Raquel Lynn, Kathryn Machin and Nicole Bubolo of the library's Resource Management division and Uday Karki and Kevin Katcher of the library's IT team and Matthew Engel from campus DoIT collaborated with the School of Journalism in developing the Center for News Literacy's Digital Resource Center (, which joins instructional design and pedagogy with the curation of born digital content to create an accessible online archive of teaching materials.  Jason Torre, head, Preservation and the Institutional Repository was the project coordinator.

Dental Instruments Exhibit Opens at SBU Health Sciences Library
Dental Instruments -- Past and Present, an exhibit of early dental tools and practices, officially opened December 1st at 11 am. A reception was held in the entrance to the Health Sciences Library where the exhibit is located. Objects in the exhibit are from the personal collection of the late R. Sherman Mills, MD, the Baer Collection from the Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and the private collection of Allan J. Kucine, DDS. After the opening reception, a lecture was given by Philias R. Garant, DMD, Professor Emeritus and former Dean, School of Dental Medicine, entitled "History of Dental Medicine." Following Dr. Garant's lecture, Xiaolin Nong, PhD, DDS presented the inaugural lecture series of the Office of Global Library Initiatives,  entitled "The Idea of Exchange." Many thanks to all who helped make this exhibit possible and to everyone who participated in the exhibit opening event. The exhibit will be featured at the Health Sciences Library until fall 2015.

The University Libraries Digital Research Collections (ContentDM platform) page has been updated.  The Digital Research Collection represents the varied and broad range of initiatives and partnerships which have developed as part of the Stony Brook University Libraries’ Digitization Program, making it a regional leader and collaborator in the digitization and preservation of the unique cultural heritage of the region.

Stony Brook University’s two George Washington letters (1779 and 1780), which document the activities of the Culper Spy Ring during the American Revolutionary War, are featured in the new television series "Secrets of the Arsenal,” which unlocks the doors to our past and provides a personal look at the some of the most powerful, emotional and compelling stories in American History. The series airs on the America’s Heroes Channel, part of Discovery Communications. Host Geoff Edgers interviewed Kristen Nyitray, Head of Special Collections and University Archives/University Archivist and New York State Assemblyman Steven Englebright for the episode. New Film - Stony Brook's First Alumni: Reunion and Reflections"
A reunion weekend was held at Stony Brook University and at Planting Fields at Oyster Bay (first campus), in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Classes of 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964, and reuniting the Founders Group, classes of 1961-1966. At Planting Fields, alumni were interviewed about their experiences and reflections of their time at the Oyster Bay campus and transitioning to the new campus in Stony Brook.

Photographs from the University Archives are featured in the 16 minute film, a joint effort of the department and the Alumni Association. A full weekend of activities was planned and included: viewing an exhibition of archival materials in Special Collections and University Archives; campus tours; a visit to Oyster Bay; and inductions into the newly-established Brook Heritage Society, for alumni who had celebrated their classes' 50th anniversary year. Niagara County Community College has just launched a semester-long commemoration to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II.  The kick-off was held in the art gallery on January 21st to mark the opening of the Wall of Honor, a collection of war-time photographs of relatives of NCCC employees.  Throughout the semester a series of activities dedicated to remembering, commemorating, and reflecting on the experiences of the men and women who served in the armed forces and worked in the factories during the Second World War will be held. 
Besides offering credit-bearing History, Honors, Music and Theater courses on the war, the College will host a faculty-led conference, a weekly film series, a musical stage production of “Cabaret”, fund raising and a V-E Day celebration. All donations and funds raised will be given to two causes for veterans. One is Buffalo Honor Flight which flies America’s veterans at no charge to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor their sacrifices. The other is the Wounded Warrior Project which works to raise awareness and enlist the public’s help for the needs of injured service members.
The library has purchased many new resources to support all areas of study relating to World War II and we are very excited about the new energy this celebration has brought to our campus.

Mary Timmons - Monroe Community College delegate

The LeRoy V Good library on the main campus is putting the final touches on the new bibliographic instruction classroom.  Six new Steelecase Verb tables with LED monitors have been installed and 30+ laptops have been purchased to support library instruction.  These tables coupled with a repositioned overhead projector system (with sound) and an upgraded instructor's station make this truly an interactive, collaborative classroom.  The librarians are busy getting comfortable with the new set-up.

Rick Squires, Collection Development Librarian, and Alice Wilson, Assistant Director, are doing outreach to the high schools as part of MCC's dual enrollment program.  Debbie Mohr, Database Control Librarian, has returned from ACRL's “Assessment: Demonstrating the Educational Value of the Academic Library” immersion program; she reports that it was very intense.  Other librarian news, Micquel Little, former assistant director, has taken a position in California and we will posting a position sometime soon (we all know what soon means in a SUNY school).   

The college is in semester two of Middle States.  Several librarians are on teams writing draft reports for the self-study portion of the evaluation.  Also, we are in the midst of a search for a new Vice President / Provost for Academic Services.  Busy time for the college and the library with people being involved in a multitude of committees across the campus.

Librarians taught 95 research sessions to a wide variety of classes during the Fall 2014 semester.

The library faculty will offer a discussion group for the popular podcast Serial during the spring semester. Part-time reference librarian Mark Seabury will coordinate the sessions. Faculty members who teach criminal justice, law, forensic science and other subjects will be invited to lead the discussions.

Cayan Library has a new director, Shannon Pritting!!  Shannon started in Utica in mid-January and we are thrilled to have him join us.  He was previously at Syracuse University.  Many of you may remember him from his days at SUNY Oswego and his presentation(s) at SUNYLA conferences as well as his involvement with the IDS Project.

 Oswego has had some recent personnel announcements.

We welcomed Elizabeth Siegel as our new half-time Reference Librarian. We said goodbye to Emily Thompson, our Learning Technologies Librarian and SUNYLA Secretary.

Hi from Albany!

You may have heard that our Dean and Director, Mary Casserly, will be retiring this summer.  The Library Dean and Director search is now getting underway.  The search committee has been appointed, and two forums for faculty, staff, and students were held with the executive search firm to discuss the position.

We installed two new water fountains in the University Library with a bottle refill spout with support from The Office of Environmental Sustainability and the Facilities Energy Office.  They allow library users to easily refill their water bottles with filtered water, in an effort to reduce waste from purchasing bottled water.  Dewey Library had one installed last year, and the Science Library will be getting one next.

We are very pleased to have just launched our new and improved Information Literacy Department website.  It highlights our new metaliteracy badging system, iLearn Workshops, and resources for faculty and students.  If you’re interested, you can check it out at :
